Civil Service dress code

Starting a new job next month in the Civil Service, at the Executive Officer level. Assumed it'd be a shirt and tie job, but somebody I know thought differently. Rang department, and the receptionist seemed to think it was anything goes, even jeans, as long as you're neat? I'm gonna dress formally on day one, anyway, but curious to know in advance if anyone knows what story is with this?

Yeah its optionally casual, but as she said, as long as its neat.

I usually wear jeans and a shirt, or jeans and a decent jumper, etc....same as most people.

Although you won't look out of place in a shirt and tie, I used to and still do wear them the very odd time...

PS - I deal with the public all the time and staff officer or otherwise never had any problems with what I wear....smart casual is definately the best way to go! And the most comfy...:D

Smart casual should be fine. The day before you start go up to the building and hang around at lunchtime. Check out what the staff are wearing as they come out at lunchtime.

I am casual all the way!! It depends on wether or not you are dealing with the public to be honest!!

Jeans and a tshirt / football jersey would be grand, as long as you don't dress ridiculously or wear anything particularily offensive (like a man u top) it doesn't make too much of a difference.

They don't like you wearing shorts.

I started as an EO this month and i did dress formally on day one. Been casual ever since though. I would say it depends slightly on the department and on the level/type of contact with the public.

If you have a lot of face to face contact, you have to be a bit less casual. eg football shirts are not a good idea. No point in giving scope for even more arguments.;) And i am basing that on previous observational experience as a CO.

If your contacts are more phone/email based you can be a lot more casual. I've noticed that some EO's and HEO's do seem to go with the power dressing option purely as a diffrentiation strategy. Not for me though.

BTW you're not going to a department in Cork by any chance?:D

it really depends on the department - you'd never get away with jeans in the department im in! the guys *all* wear shirt and tie or a suit except on the odd friday if going away for the weekend etc.

Don't dress too formally, went in in a suit when i started and still get slagged over it. I'm an EO and I dont deal with the public face to face but i dress smart casual (not to OTT). I'm a girl by the way and I usually go for nice informal trousers/tops along the lines of NEXT.

Thanks everybody for the info. Saved me a packet of money on the shirt/tie/suit wardrobe that I thought needed replenishing!
Will go in formal on day one, and follow my nose from there on.
Find it bizarre, tbh. Once worked in a call centre, where jeans weren't allowed! To find that they're probably ok in this job is a big surprise. Not complaining, though...
(Not going to Dublin or Cork. Something a little less metropolitan awaits.)
