    myself and my girlfriend have been living at my parents house for the past 2 years while we build our new house. Do we have any claim for tax relief, or indeed would my parents??

    Also, we've rented before for approx. 2 years, but never claimed rent relief, one of the placed definetly was not a registered property so i probably havent a leg to stand on there, maybe someone could advise.

    Is all this even worth the bother?!

    defo... the government owes you money... why not take it ... its just one or two forms to fill out...

    It's amazing how many people dont bother doing stuff like this...

    everyone should have filled out RENT-1 and MED-1 tax forms...

    You are also able to claim back a number of years too.

    Also if you get money from RENT-1 for back payment you will get tax credits every year going forward until you stop renting so its automatic...

    But if the landlord was not a registered property and doesent want to be included in tax relief is there anything i can do.

    And i can definetly claim tax relief for living at home with my parents, where i paid rent. Does the rent a room scheme come into play here at all?

    So do you actually get tax relief on your paycheck or do you get a check in the post? I applied for this, assumed that it was tax relief as I haven't actually gotten any money into my hand.

    If you are claiming for back years then the Revenue will refund you.

    As mentioned, as long as you continue to rent, going forward you will be entitled to an additional tax credit of €330. You will receive this through your annual credits. The Revenue will issue you and your employer with a revised tax certificate and you will then be taxed accordingly.

    As for claiming for an unregistered property. You are entitled to claim the Rent Credit. It is unethical that your landlord is not paying tax on money he/she receives. If you still are a little edgy about claiming, you technically are not obliged to disclose your landlord's PPS number on the Rent 1. You will still receive the credit if you do not. Revenue will be able to match up names to addresses and that way might be able to track down tax dodging landlords. But it would be hard work!

    If you are worried that you might bring your parents to the attention of the Revenue then perhaps you should not claim. Rent a Room relief for 2006 is €7,620. You should not claim, if for some reason, you are paying more than that or your parents are in receipt of other rental income. Anything over that amount will be taxed at the appropriate rate.

    As for claiming for previous years I don't think it specifies how far back you can claim. It states that if you are claiming for back years you must have some form of evidence of payment.
