    Hi,
I have reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP Professional on an IQON laptop, and there is no COM1 port listed in the device manager. As a result of this the modem will not work. How do i install the COM1 port?
Any help would be appreciated

Are there any unknown devices in the device manager ?

have you installed any drivers for it yet?
go to the IQQN website and grab the chipset drivers for whatever model your laptop is if not

    thanks guys,
i have installed all the neccessary drivers, so device manager looked good (apart from no COM port!) but have not installed chipset drivers yet. i'm downloading the drivers now in.iso format, so will let ye know how it goes....
thanks for the help so far.

Yea if you don't have the chipset drivers installed then windows won't detect things like modems, graphic cards, etc properly. Once you install chipset drivers windows will prob detect your modem on reboot.

got it sorted now, but it was a weird one.
the laptop allowed me to install lucent drivers for the modem, but the modem would not work, even though it appeared ok in the device manager.
reinstalled XP and installed all the required drivers contained in the iso image i got from the mitac site.
this time toally different driver software was loaded for the modem (PCtel drivers). There is still no COM port listed, but the modem is now working normally.
i would have thought that lucent drivers would not install for a PCtel modem??
anyways, all sorted now, thanks again for your help folks! q :)
