    Hi,

    I have just completed my build of a Pentium D950.
    I am doin an install of XP Pro from a Dell Reinstallation disk.

    What are the must have programmes I should install right away? (Especially security software). Preferably freeware. Will installing Xp with a Dell cd cause any issues?

    does the name not give anything away?
    i'd be fairly surprised if you actually get it to install... (and even if you do, you're still going to run into licencing issues)

    tis worth a shot though, good luck with it :p

    and as for software;
    Firefox (use instead of ie)
    Thunderbird (use instead of outlook express)
    and adware, firewall and virus protection as already mentioned

    The Dell re-installation disk will work as long as you have a Dell motherboard and Bios. It will not work otherwise.

    this only applies to some disks, to such an extent that its almost an urban myth!

    If the OP has a COA on the computer he's fine. M$ are fairly liberal about what media you use to insatall the OS once you have a valid COA.

    Yes but the COA in the is case is prob an OEM license. Which can only be used on the machine that it came with. Indeed if you replace the motherboard on a OEM machine you need to get a new license as MS deems this to be a new PC.

    So if you use the Dell CD to install on your new build it is in fact an unlicensed copy of Windows.
