hey, i wonder if any of you can help.

i have an XP pro machine that will load as far as the loading screen, then it'll restart back to the POST & continue to load as far as the "Start Windows Normally/Safe Mode" options, followed by a reboot if i choose "Start Normally" or "Safe Mode with Networking", however i havent tried to choose the other options as after i chose "Safe mode with Net" and it restarted, it loaded up perfectly using the "Start Normally" option!!!

i've been told by my parents that the problem comes and goes (i do be in college weekdays and this is the first time i've seen it).

    any ideas?

    thanks.
    Eoin

intermittent booting problems are a bugger, because you never really know if its just cosmic rays randomly passing through your mobo or the signs of future problems. Next time, try removing any usb devices and booting. Also run chkdsk and defrag while it is booting normally. This could also be a sign that the PSU is on the way out, it happened to me a while back, the system would only boot every now and again.

    How old is the system?

What do the event logs tell you is happening?

did the clean install work? might give it a go as a last resort.

Whats Prime95? im tihnkin it might be the PSU. we had electricians in recently and they cut the power without us shutting down properly then jolted the power back on. since then the CD-RW has stopped workin and the orignial HDD went (theres a new 200gb one in now).

by the way, the system is fairly old. pentium 3 550mhz. 256mb ram. XP Pro.

the thing is now that it seems to be workin grand. maybe the PC is female and goes thru periods or sumtin! haha

Its a program used to test/stress your computer to check for weaknesses or instability. It runs various tests on your CPU and ram.
