Selling my desktop and am I'm looking for a lap top.
    Probably spend up to €800
    My only wants would be:
    CD/ DVD Dual Format Burner
    40GB min HD
    512MB Ram min
    Soundcard: in, out & mic
    Modem/ Network

After that, I can't think of anything else. Anything else I should look out for?
It'll mostly be used for a bit of music, photoshop etc. So something that's a bit fast is all that's required.

New or good condition 2nd hand. I don't mind.
    Any one offer some help?

    Dell.

Recently they had a 1.6 Celeron M, 512ram, 60gb Hd and dvd burner for 450 inc vat.

Not dual layer, but with the cash saved over you could always get an external one. Check out the Bargin Alerts thread, you can't miss the massive Dell thread.

No point going overboard and getting higher specs then you actually need....so unless you need a very good machine for heavy multimedia work/games, Dell will offer you best value for money.

When considering 2nd hand, always consider battery life. Most batteries have a lifetime of 1-2 years, so if the latptop is any older than that, you may have the addtional cost of buying a new battery.

If you can manage it, go for new as you will have a guarantee. And you know where is been.

I was really only considering "as new" high spec 2nd Hand one.
The one I listed above seems to ME to be ok.
Anyone with a bit of knowledge?

Could get better with DELL. I was looking at their site today - there was an inspiron 6400 with a gig of ram and a better gfx solution - GMA950 - for 840. ;)

Yes, this one seems decent for the price. Toshiba generally build good machines.

But, as others have mentioned, if you want a machine with a similar spec for around 150 Euro less, check out Dell.
