new Canon Digital SLR ?

I have a Canon EOS SLR and am looking to buy a Canon 350D. I was just going to get the body only from Digital World for 628 Euro and use my existing lenses. Because I'm VAT registered I can get 16% off. So approx 528 euro.

Or I can buy a second hand EOS 10D for 825 euro cash. Body only.

I just wondering if I'm better off paying the extra for the 10D. I'm not a big user so it might not be worth it.

Any comments on the two cameras ? or suggestions ?

Obviously you get a whole lot more camera for your money with the 10D. The build quality, and also the size (the 350D is too small and light for some people who are used to something a bit more substantial, although you can get a battery grip that gives it a bit more body) are the big differences never mind all the extra metering modes, the improved quality at higher ISO and I'm only guessing but I expect the FPS is higher too. But if you're not a big user, you might want to consider that with a brand new camera, you won't be inheriting someone else's dust and dirt, and you will have at least a year's warranty. Depends what you want to get out of the camera itself. If it were me, hmmmmmmmmm.... I'd probably cave and go for the 10D I think.

Hmmm...Difficult one. I think I'd go with the 350 though. You'd never know how the 10d was treated until it goes wrong or anything...

You could spend the extra few bob on a shiny new lens then?

Considering you can buy a 20D for €1068(AC-Foto) with a 17-55mm EF-S Lens and still claim you vat back. A second hand 10D doesn't look very good value for money (in my opinion).

Thanks for all the replies. I might check out the 20D - approx 850 euro, body only.

I notice on the Canon site that the 10D is not listed.

Should I be OK using the lenses from my standard SLR ?

    I would go (and went) for a 10D over a 350d anytime.
Mainly because the 10d is larger than the 350 and the viewfinder is much brighter.
But 825 body only, the 10d would have to be mint.
You can pick a 10d body on ebay for 5/600 Euro

the lenses from you standard SLR will work fine on your digital , the only change will be that you get and effective zoom of 1.6 over the range on your standard lenses due to the smaller sensor , so say , a 28mm focal length becomes 44.8mm , so you may need to invest in a wide angle lens if landscapes are your thing , on the plus side , because the sensor is only using the middle of the glass , the picture quality improves.

You will need a lens starting at say , 17 -18mm to get the same field of view as a 28mm on a film slr.

If you can stretch to it I would go for the 20D. Failing that the 350D. I have a 10D and am very happy with it but the 350D, which is basically a cut down 20D, seems to my subjective mind, to produce results that are more pleasing to my eye. It may be plasticy compared to the 10 or 20 but everyone I know that has one are very happy with it. Browsing the net and looking at some of the best bloggers and flickr'rs a lot seem to be using the 350D.

sorry to interrupt the thread gallantman, but I've just looked at the 20d and canon 350d. Both look good.

the 10d was brought out in feb 2003 <here> 6.3megapix
the 20d was brought out in aug 2004 <here> 8.2megapix
the 350d was brought out this year I think <here> 8megapixel CMOS sensor (not same as EOS 20D)

Thats prob why u didn't see the 10d on the site(oldish)?!?

I'm interested in the 350 myself as I'm pretty new to the whole scene. I've a quick question (nooblet and all), would minolta lenses work with canon digital slr cameras?

Theres also a 20da - though I think the only difference to a 20d is in regards to astonomy type nightsky photography. I think a 20d is a good investment. imo.

10D is an old camera with an old sensor. If money is available go for the 20D. Great camera and worth the money. If you can't stretch to the 20 get the 350 instead. Superb camera and if you don't like size, which I don't, then add the grip and its perfect.

    For Sniipe ,
Unfortunately Minolta lenses dont work with a canon mount , Ive heard rumours of convertors but have yet to see one , and anyway as far as I know convertors only let you use manual focus .

( which wouldn't be all bad , I have access to some minolta lenses that I would love to use on my 20D ! )

thanks andy1249, I wouldn't be interested in a converter. Its just my sister has minolta camera SLR with a few lenses. As a beginner in photography I wouldn't need an extra lense anyway.

his advice was grand IMO, all you did was cut and paste from a site, i'd rather first hand info than a cut and paste from a site.

I'd rather a cut and paste from another site where they know what they're talking about than listen to Andy's blithering rants.
