Does this type of effect look alright for cars and motorsports??

I'm not taking the shot seriously or anything ,I was just wondering?

It makes it look more like an advert for something.

I think the colours and levels of that picture dont suit the subject matter - it looks a bit harsh and 'overcooked' imo.

thanks ,was thinking of smoke and tyre burning when bumping up the colour.

appreciate the replies ,I'm just trying different things in photoshop ,I feel I'm copying others by just defining the photos and riching the saturation.

I'm not sure if it's saying "fast cars" but I like it. The advertising thing did spring to mind when you can mainly see "Dunlop! Dunlop!! Dunlop!!!!"

It may be a bit much with the busy background. I know you said not to rate the picture on it's own but i think it may be difficult to get one without something else distracting in the background.

Pop art all the way....the colour saturation works well imo, if anything go more OTT. If you can isolate the cars from the cluttered background and get a bit of detail back into the tyres I think it'd be great.

looks like the kinda cheap effect which you'd see in the background of an ad for something on setanta sports...

yeah i'd agree, why not just do some basic adjustments, are you going for an arty effect to it, kinda looks digital art as to photography

Thanks ,was only expecting a couple of replies .

I only fluted with it for about 5 minutes ,I thought i'd just do something and then see what people think.
Sometimes i try so hard i forget what it was ,I was originally trying to do.

I've got into film at the weekend and I've got the feeling back that I lost on digital ,the "Stick your hands out and see what god gives ye" feeling.:D

Thanks a mill for the feedback.

I was screwing around with a few photos in a similar fashion a few weeks ago and came out with this ->

I think that was mostly contrast & saturation.

Kind of a bit off topic but does anyone know when the next motor rally is on and where ? I think this looks like a excellent subject matter to have a go at.

Yep. A great idea for our band of intrepid explorers ;)

We could probably organise a day out around that - the next rally event ? Anyone else like that idea ?

Last time I tried to photograph a rally,it was in Mitchelstown, I was 13 and a stone flew off from the back tyre of an Escort and hit me in the b*llox...

Hmmm...Actually, where's Paddy@CIRL gone...He could give us some tips on shooting cars.

    Someone Mention Cars ? :D

Rally's are all well and good but are very competitive between other photographers who will often see you as an enemy rather than a friend. your very limited in where you stand, and usually your stuck in the one spot for an entire stage.

There is of course a Round of Prodrift on the weekend of the 3rd/4th of June at Mondello Park, Co. Kildare. Great action can be had all day with good vantage points available.

About that first shot, I dont think it works at all. As an art piece, probably but as a motoring piece, Definitely not. There are really only two major styles to motorsport photography. Still & Movement.

    Still
This is mostly used for head on shots and predominatly by Rally photographers. Car's usualy look like they are stopped in the middle of the road, high shutter speeds really kill any sense of action most of the time. Fair enough if you get a head on shot of a WRC car coming towards you into a corner with smoke coming off the front tires and an expression on the drivers face it works. You'll usually have a lot more keepers from this style of shooting too.

    Movement
My preferred method of shooting, lots of panning but you will lose a lot of photos, mostly because of turning focal plane but thats for another day ! Try and get yourself parallel to the passing car and aim to keep the headlights in focus. Depending on speed of car work from 1/60th of a second up for cars travelling around 20-30mph, 1/100th for cars doing 70mph and keep pushing up.

Pop of flash used to help the process !

But I would reccommend ye to come along to the drifting, there will be an event on somewhere near ye this year, check out www.prodriftirl.com for dates and venues :)

Here's a few of mine from the First round ...

Those drift ones are excellent - are they photoshopped at all or did you pan and capture them that way ?

    Burnout/nfs2 here we come !

Speaking of shopping motorsports, I notice someone added a few bikes to a picture of mine:

I don't know who did it but I'm more flattered than annoyed that they didn't ask permission.

Paddy ,whats the story on rally maps ?? ,could only get dates on the irish rally website.

Great to see some decent motorsports up on the screen ,especially irish ones:D

This picture is one I took with a little A20 a few years back ,the fastest car I've ever been in.

Keep an eye out on www.rally.ie for upcoming events. you usually get stage maps the day of the rally in local supermarkets nearby the stages.

All those Drifty shots are untouched, check the galleries on www.prodriftirl.com for more from that event and from future ones :)
