    Hey,

Got a new job and have to go for a medical.
Never actually had to have one in all my previous jobs.

I'm sure it's pretty much a formality... just wondering how long it takes and what sort of stuff in entails.

    Cheers for any info

(I'd search for this if the search function was working...sorry for a repost)

First off , none of the details of the medical will go back to your employer , or shouldn't anyway , your employer will just get a thumbs up ( healthy ) or thumbs down ( not fit for work ) , and thats it , no details.

You will be provided with detailed results though ,

    It usually involves ,

Urinanalysis , ( sample of ) , used for testing for drug habits , use or dependancies , kidney infections , etc.
Anything you have taken in the last couple of weeks will show up , alcohol , smoke , whatever , and this is mostly what this test is for when the occasion is a works medical.

Blood test , this one is standard if your medical is a VHI one , other medicals dont include this , you can get your own doctor to do this but that wont be covered by your employer and is 50 euro.
This is a conprehensive series of tests to see if you have any major problems. Always good to get done.

General physical , ie touch your toes , lean from side to side , ( checking for back trouble etc. )

Respiratory test , Blow hard into a wide tube , and your lung age and respiratory system results show up on a little screen , Checks for lung damage due to smoking or inhaling anything nasty , again a good one to get done , really shows up bad if you are a smoker !! ( lung age of 60 say when your are only 25 !! )

An eye test is usually included as well , this is very general though , and most everyone will pass it , sometimes theres a colour blindness test thrown in if the job requires it.

And thats about it , should take about 2 hours !!

The doctor may also check for VD by catching your testicles and asking you to cough.

    That's a hernia test I think.
