I live in an old gatelodge and we've been invaded by 'creepy' bats. I have no desire to kill them but I want to get them out of the house, they're scaring the children.

Are you in Ireland? If so they are protected and may not be able to be moved. I can get you some advice if you like but like i said it depends if you're in ireland.

To the best of my knowledge you can't actually do anything. We have bats in the roof space and love watching them circling the house on summer evenings. Leave them be and enjoy:D

It is absouloutley ILLEAGAL to interfer with bats in any way unless you are licensed to work with bat.

Where are you in Ireland, my brother is a member of the Irish bat society and is licensed. I can put you in touch with him, I'm sure he can locate someone in yourt are who can help.

Ditto, Irelands wildlife is in a bad enough state without people killing off bats. It is illegal the bat society will give you tips on how to discourage them you may have to set up bat boxes away from the house.
Educate your children about bats, they are not creepy and are harmless in fact they are doing you a favour by eating all the insects.
Even if the children are afraid teach them to respect wildlife and why bats are around. I hate spiders but I won't pass that fear onto my child

As I said before. I have NO DESIRE to kill them. I'm aware that that is illegal. I don't have a problem with bats but I would like to remove them from my home safely and without harm. I have also explained to my children that they are harmless. However, I don't feel I'm being cruel if I would prefer that they weren't in my home.
I am also aware that I could have a pregnant female. In which case I will not take ANY action. If they don't move on after that and before they go into hibernation then I would just like to have relevant information of what to do.
Thankyou for your help, Sysiphus, I will contact the Irish Bat Society if I need further help. I wil be sure not to do anything until I have spken to them.

Was talking to my brother about this, he opines that they will be looking after babies about now and not good to move them. They will leave the roost at the end of summer, but will return for winter. I can still put you in touch with him if you require.
