How does one uninstallon mac?

I'm needing to uninstall messenger coz its annoying me coz I want to just use the updated version. Only got my mac less than a year now and havent tried to uninstall anything. Any mac buddies out there? Any help is great. thanks in advance.

Tried that before. That is the basic way but It says I dont have enough privileges to do so.
?
So....
Still stuck. Its just strange coz the dock has like two messengers underneath if i try to open mesenger (its still the old one). The new one installs on to the computer it doesnt overlay the old one.
Argh!
