building a site for my photos, just wanna see what people think are the dos and don't of photo site building?

    html/flash/web2

so many options, flickr is grand and all, but i'd like something more personal to call my own, anyone else agree?

Flash is generally considered terrible for photo sites (unless you're, say, a professional who needs to "impress" clients buying your services, and only needs to show a few photos), if for no other reason than that you can't *link* to photos on a flash site. (Never mind some of us crusty web geeks who still consider flash to be evil incarnate.) ;)

For setting up your own site, there's some great software like Gallery, or Picasa if you want to do a Blogger weblog. (obligatory disclaimer, I worked on Picasa so I'm not exactly objective about it!)

well i used adobe bridge and it has some great stuff, generates flash sites even for you, but any way.

what bout a fron page then link to pics, or straight into the pic page, should i leave a comments section, should i leave comments on the pics, should i do a different types pages?

Well, if your just showing off your work to people who might be hiring you, don't have a comment section...Last thing a potential client needs to see is someone saying "composition is all wrong" etc.

If you just want to learn then a comments section might be the way, but then again, Flickr does pretty much the same thing.

Those thumbnails are annoying. Either have a thiumbnail or don't - but don't have a ****ing tiny photo at the bottom that moves when you try to click on it.

I wouldn't say flash is terrible, if it's used right the results can be good.

http://www.group94.com/ do some great flash photo sites like:

i've used flash for my galleries. I like it because you cant link to photos or easily download the image. I still need to make a html page for each gallery but if you go here (http://briang.org/subsonic) and click on the folders you'll see what I mean. theses were picasa's web export feature.

i tried out picassas web export flash, didn't like the layout of it too much, but i think flash looks very well, tho i don't know much tbh. the challenge to download the files may appeal to more serious photographers but it doesnt bother me, take em, i'd be honoured:o
