anybody know a recipe for cheap homemade weedkiller.
I want to keep clear a patio, border and path.
    kill everything growing.
not vinegar please. it didn't work for me.
not weedol or commercial stuff either. it's too expensive in the long run.
something cheap that kills everything ?

weedol is probably cheaper considering the latest prices at the pumps

try your local co-op and get the stuff the farmers use....a few drops to a litre kills everything in site

    Salt
just sprinkle a handful on the base of weeds and they will wither and die.
you can buy a big sack of coarse salt for about 10 euro

    salt,
buy a load of ordinary table salt, COVER your patio with as much of it as you can afford (the more the better), specially in the cracks, leave the rest to the rain!
    Wholla, instant dead-earth. ;)

Salt does work but its very temporary. Lash it on in handfuls around the cracks, edges where the weeds are prevalent and pour a few kettles of boiling water on it. Oldschool.
I have a friend who grows his own vegetables ( potatoes, etc) in his garden in Meath who use a blowlamp/ butane torch to kill them off. Swears by it. Time consuming though and the gas isn't cheap. Apprently this method kills them off for longer than anything else. Smell is also woeful.

Heavy duty black plastic laid under the paving slabs. Permanent solution. Make sure you make some allowances for drainage.

Anywhere I've seen this it doesn't seem to be Permanent. Maybe they are not using the right plastic though.

Roundup is expensive, but if your using it right you should get good value for your money. Spray when it's dry and the weeds are actively growing and mix according to the instructions for your particular application.
