    Problem:

Linksys router: The firmware was incorrectly flashed (flashed with Annex B instead of A), is there a way to undo this or should it just be thrown out and replaced?

If you can still access the webpage config of router you can load old firmware back on. I installed a French firmware to my WRT54G by accident previously. No prob rolling it back to the previous UK version.

If you can't access the router (web config, ping, etc) then you've bricked it and you'll just have to chuck it. :(

Thanks irlrobins, that is what I feared... The ray of sunshine at the end of this is that the owner (and I just found this out) bought this in Argos, has the receipt but not the boxes, this is going back Monday, let ya know how it goes.

    :)

There are ways to recover a bricked router, from memory you need to open it up and create a short somewhere.

See http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums - there should be some useful info there.

Coola, all he has to say is that it's not working and he's been on to Linksys tech support who told him to return it ot place of manfacture. It's not as if Argos would be in a position to check it. :D

    Don't I know it!!! ;)

He actually has been on to them but couldn't understand the CSRs thick Pakistani accent so just gave up.

Thanks for the link Jabbathegut, will have a read. :)

i believe you need a program called "tftp" and a proper linksys firmwarre, and you can recover a bricked router even if you can't access the login screen.

Where can I get said tftp program? Googling it now!

This page notes that a special variation of TFTP with authentication support needs to be used.

    In a nutshell:

If the Boot Wait parameter was previously enabled, you need to start the TFTP transfer in the first few seconds after router power up (while the power LED is still flashing).

If the Boot Wait parameter was not previously enabled, you'll need to open up the router and short two pins on the flash chip during power up to enable Failsafe mode.

Great, can't wait to see if I can revive this on Monday when I get my hands on it, nothing to loose as its only 7 months old.

Thanks Snowbat, didn't get anything like that much info when I googled.

Returned it in the end got replacement and he gave me a Linksys USB Adaptor for my troubles, wasn't even taken out of the box. Nice, €60 worth. :)

No I did have a go but to set it into a state to receive the firmware I'd of had to crack it open and that meant breaking the warrenty seal on the side so I left it and just got him a new one... cough ... no ...cough... questions asked!

It was his sister who made the mistake... that reminds me must remind him to change the admin password so it can't happen again.

The very reason I had BIOS, HD and Windows passwords set on my machine....
