Ok there's no money on this but loads of pride. Is there anything grammatically incorrect about saying:

"Who all is going to the match?" when talking about a group or should one say:

"Who is going to the match?" regardless of whether the anticipated answer is singular or plural?

    e.g.

x: Who is going to take you place
    y: john

    and

x: Who all is in your 5-a-side footy team?
    y: john, w,c,v,b

or should it always be "who is"? I feel I've laboured the poiint now but you get the idea.. Opinions please.

Yep Femmy's Right. You would say "who is", not "who all".

If you're speaking the queens English then its "Who Is". If you're using the uniquely wonderfully Irish slant on our neighbours language then "Who all is" is fine. Up with dialecting and slanging up the language.
(By the way Pighead doesn't care if dialecting or slanging aren't words)

Why does Pighead talk about himself in the third person? ;)

"Who is" is the correct way to ask the question.

I'd give her more than that.

'Who all is' just sounds rediculous.

Any particular reason why you're suggesting giving the 36 year old attractive mathematical genius a bell? If its for reasons of a sexual nature fair enough but to be honest buddy its relevance to this thread is non existent. Off to the smut forum with you boy.

"Who all" is OK if y'all are from Texas. Otherwise "Who is". Hope y'all lost the bet.

    Not your ornery onager

I have never heard "who all" used in this way ever. It is who as who is plural and singular.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭BoozyBabe

"Who is" is correct, but I would say "who all is" as does everyone else in my neck of the woods, so I guess it just depends on where you're from.

I've have studied English for years and am now employed as a teacher. "Who all" is perfectly fine and proper. Next.

Who all is going to the match?

Or... you can say "Is y'all going to the match?"

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Wouldn't that be "Are y'all going to the match?" :)

When new born puppies sh*it, their mother licks the pups assh*ole clean, sort of an instinct thing. I have taken this on board and now teach my students this, but not as mothering instinct, as a completely sexual thing. And yes, we are still enrolling.
