Over Heating Graphics Card.

I recently put together a pc from second hand parts, I installed windows and all was going well. I decided to put a different graphics card in to it after this though as I decided the graphics card in it was a bit advance for what the computer was being used for. So I switched the cards and booted up into windows. I put in a cd to start installing some programs and the monitor went into stand by. I was confused by this so restarted the computer. This time before it even go to windows the monitor went off. I switched everything off and checked the inside of the computer, everything looked ok, I checked all connections between mobo and HD etc. As I moved my hand round the inside of the case I felt some heat, I then found that it was coming from the graphics card. I though maybe this graphics card had seen its day so switched back to the original one I used which seemed fine. But unfortunately the problem is occurring this this card now. Any suggestions as to what can be done or what the source of the problem might be? Thanks

Two graphics cards both exhibiting the same problem I don't know it sounds strange to me or something else is the problem. There would have to be pretty bad airflow and something wrong with the GPU cooler for it to get that hot.

Does the monitor that switches off work fine with other computers ?

Can you test the computer with another PSU in case the one present in the system is dodgy.

Also I'd try running Memtest+ if you can and see if there is anything wrong with the system RAM.

It's not a Gateway EV700 monitor, is it?

How do you run a Memtest+?

Its not bad airflow cause I had the side of the case taken off and had a case fan pointed at the graphics card.

Its not a EV700 monitor, its an old Packard Bell one and works totally fine with my other computer.

I have another PSU that I might put into it and see how that goes. Would it have anything to do with the AGP port having anything wrong with it? Or would the graphics card just not work at all it there was a problem with the port its self?

Are AGP Posts backwards compatible? Like will a AGP 8x port take a AGP 4x CArd or are all AGP ports the same?

You can get Memtest+ from this site - download one of the bootable versions available in floppy, USB and CD form let it run for a while and see if any errors are reported if so then some of your system RAM is defective.

Could be a motherboard issue but its hard to say as you mention the computer worked briefly enough to allow you to install Windows on it so something must have given up in it's usage to cause this problem, next thing I'd try would be the PSU.

If the PSU gets the all clear try clearing the CMOS of the motherboard or search for a bios update who knows it might/might not work but it's worth a go.

The early 1x-2x AGP ports if I recall has some compatibility issues but most 4x and 8x cards should work in those ports, it comes down to the voltage 1.5 V cards will not go into 3.3 V slots and vice versa, but many AGP slots exist which accept either type of card.

If you know the make of your motherboard and can find it's spec on the makers website or the manual it should tell you what kind of AGP voltage cards it allows and then its not diffcult to find out the same info about what kind voltage the graphics card uses.

The motherboard is a MSI MS-6382. The first cardd that worked fine installing windows is a Sapphire Radeon 9200SE AIW 128MB
(https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=122218) and the other card is a basic vga card from an old P3 Dell.

According to MSI's manual the rev2.0 of the MS-6382 has an AGP4x slot and accepts 1.5 and 3.3v cards.

The rev 1.0 has an AGP 4x slot and only accepts 1.5v cards according to HP the MSI manual didn’t reveal anything on this but the HP board is identical to the rev 1.0 version.

You should be able to tell which version motherboard you have by looking at the picture on HP's site and looking at the picture in the rev 2.0 PDF on MSI's site.

Note MSI also have a bios update on their site for the board which fixes some AGP graphics card issues could be worth a try.

The ATI 9200 series uses a universal connector and supports both 1.5 and 3.3v so it should work....

O.K I switched over power supplies, the dosen't seem to heat up any more but the screen still goes into stand by after a few mins into windows.

Probably a bit basic but did you remember to remove the video driver for the first card?

tbh, it just sounds like the video setting is being set to high for your monitor. Hit F8 just after the bios screen, and go into safe mode, and see if it works from there.

No, it gets into windows fine at the right res, just after a few mins cuts out.
