I play poker reasonably moderately and my entire family think I'm sick and that I'll burn in hell because of it. Why don't people get poker?

    lol.

Are they really being that serious?

They might just be afraid that you could be getting addicted.

If your making a profit or not too much of a loss then there should be nothing to worry about.

I was just reading a book by Lyle Berman, a business man and poker player. He tries to explain how poker is similar to business but dissimilar to roulette/craps etc. You can be smart and have a positive expectation (make money) or be dumb and have a negative expectation in poker and business. In both there is a risk. In Roulette and the likes you never have a positive expectation (I'm not saying Roulette players will burn in hell - not due to Roulette at least).
You may try to explain this difference to them. Maybe you could keep a record of your games and show them that you are winning money - if you are loosing you should probably still keep a record, but don't show it to the folks.

Or get them to play. Its highly addictive, you may be able to turn them into degenerate gamblers too, then they won't have a leg to stand on.

That's quite a god analogy. I'll have to use that one 'cos I'm sick of "is poker gambling?" question.
BTW Lyle Berman is a legend and very clever man. I really like is PLO section in SS2. It's very simple but straight to the point. An excellent crash course for anyone who wants to learn PLO basics very quickly.

pokypoky. Don't worry. there is no life after death so you can't go to hell, but if there was a hell we'd ALL be going there. **** don't let posters from the phylosophy forum see this one.

BTW how much did you have to drink before posting this? :D

My entire family think that I'm sick and that I'll burn in hell too ... but its not because of poker.

Really ? I thought it was a load of rubbish that didnt add anything, or explain anything at all. I thought it totally sucked as a guide.

In fact - there really arent too many good PLO books. Only Reubens one (thus far), has been worth the entrance fee.

My parents are convinced I am going to lose millions over this, my mothers interesating thought process is that if you are not an alcaholic then you will be addicted to gambling, also few people in the family have been addicted so thinks it is in the genes!

the only solution is to disown your family and move to Vegas

How about this one, Martins son who is 14 phone him last week to say that he was down to the last 100 in WSOP and he was chip leader with X amount of chips. He was playing his PsP portable game. He knows all the rules (whichever version) and is a good player and yes only 14...

Yeah I tried that with the whole christmas poker thing, but I just got the feeling everyone was observing my addiction, it felt as if they were waiting for some mad poker monster to leap out of my chest and prove them all right.

Plus I lost heads up to my 15 year old sister who completely outplayed me, so not only am I sick but I'm also crap.

My parents think I am messed up too. Playing some tourneys on stars the other night.
Dad: "Are you playing two tables at once?"
    Me: "No"
    Dad: "Oh"
    Me: "I'm playing three tables"
Dad: "You're sick, you're addicted, you need serious help"

Everytime I say I'm off to the fitz I get a 10 minute lecture about how I'm ruining my life and how I will lose it all in the end. Whenever I come home with winning my mum will say: "now save the money and quit. But you won't will you? You'll play until you lose it all back and more." I've even been told how they think I'm going to bankrupt the whole family.

    My parents hate poker.

By the way, great thread title carlo. My advice would be to play more and more until your parents can't fight it anymore.

I find the best solution is to completely disregard anything your parents say about it. Just be save in the knowledge that you know way more than them and laugh yourself to sleep every night about how super awesome you are!!

I'm reading Reubens book now and I think its pretty bad. His preflop seems poor and postflop is nothing special. Not mad about the overall structure either. I picked up much more from Lyle Berman's SS2 chapter. Maybe I was spoilt with TOP and Harrington being my first Poker book encounters.

Yes that's exactly why I don't want them coming here. I read it it ONLY to find people I can take the piss out of.

About poker though, I dont really understand why people can't appreciate it as a skilled game and I think we should take more pride as a country in our talented young players and those who have achieved in the past.

Just use the line from rounders ;)

Why does this still seem like gambling to you? Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table at the World Series of Poker every single year? What are they, the luckiest guys in Las Vegas? It's a skill game, Jo.

I used to always have this problem especially with my gf who thought i was a compulsive gambler until i qualified for the VC Student championships in London with all expenses included for 2. Free bar and free food and suddenly i'm halfway to convincing her. She'd never even seen a poker table before this time and ever since she watched the game she's always getting me to organise home games.

I also made the terrible mistake of letting her play online poker. The problem is she's WINNING!!! She thinks it's great fun and easy to make money after playing STT's.

Whats ironic is that suddenly i'm the one telling her that poker has its ups and downs and there are days she might lose money(my money :)) .

I thought this was the best time to tell her i'm going pro while she's winning money :D and she's accepted it whereas if she had never came on that VC poker trip she'd probably still think POKER was a thing used to help fires light!!!!
