Canon 50mm f1.8 II ... bit plasticky?

I finally got around to buying the Canon 50mm f1.8 II lenses, but I'll a little disappointed with how "cheap" the body of the lense feels. It feels very plasticy. I was expecting a metal body, because I heard the I version was quite well built.

Just wondering has anyone had any problems with the II version? Does it break easily?

Sorry to hijack your thread somewhat, but I'm looking to get one too. Should be up in Dublin on Sunday, where might I get it? I'd presume Gunn's are closed if they are a family-run business? Plus what price is it at offline?

I would be curious about the going price on that one too.

I got mine in Gunnes for €136, they were €139 everywhere else i checked. I know they're cheaper on the net but i needed it that day. As far as build quality is concerned i have no complaints, it's a fantastic lens for the money. If you want a better build quality go for the 50mm f1.4, but it's 3 times the price

FFS (excuese my language) Where did you hear it was well built? I have the lens and every review I ever read said it was plasticy. Jazus take a few pictures with it and come back. It's a class lens. Bang it off your tiled floor and I'm sure it'll fall apart if that will make you feel better!! But sure if how a lens looks is the most important part, well.................................

I have one which I bought second-hand about 10 years ago.
I use it once in a while but it usually *floats* around my backpack...
Never really took any care of it and it still works perfectly.
It is plasticky but it seems to be made of 1 big plastic bit, which is much better than a lens where the metal mount is screwed onto the plastic body.

The Mark I version of the lens is a metal body.
As was mentioned before, every person who ever mentions this lens, mentions thathat it is plasticky. But the optics at that price ? Can't go wrong

they dont call it "the plastic toy lens" for nothing. It's a fantastic lens for the money, couldn't possibly ask for beter.

Never mind the width, feel the quality! 50mm f/1.8 for €136, so what if it has a plastic body?

It's a brilliant lens, great value.

I agree, fantastic lens, the plastic doesn't make a difference unless you're gonna be throwing it round the place. i've barely taken mine off my camera since i got it and have had no problems!

Good prices on that site andy do they take credit card or is it the faxback thing? Whats the reference number on the customer data page? PS I got my 50mm f1.8 in Conns and I am delighted with it. Took some of my best pictures with it.. Here's a few samples

The thing I love about primes is they make you work for your shots as it's you not the camera lens that does all the moving..

I think this link should bring you straight to it , the reference # is 284141 , I have ordered lots of stuff from these guys and they are very good, no problems at all.

For the first order they request a scanned copy of photo ID and credit card , ( just clone over the credit card number and leave the last four digits ) , and then order away !
