iPod Wiped

I've a 40GB click wheel iPod. Twice in the past month when I connected to my PC (Windows) and opened iTunes I get a message saying iTunes cannot read the contents the iPod and then I discover all my albums etc... are gone from my iPod. The first time it happened I restored it to the factory settings but it's happened again this evening. Anyone got any ideas why this is happening?

    Cheers!

i'd say its most likely because you have corrupted the contents on the IPod HDD somehow

Do you transfer 'data' to/from the iPOD as well as 'music'?
Do you connect to more than one computer?
Do you connect to a MAC and/or PC? Both?
Do you 'safely remove' the iPOD?
    How old is the iPOD?

    (1) I used to transfer some .txt files but not in a good while and after the last time it got wiped the .txt files got wiped too.
    (2) No I always only connect it to my PC
    (3) It's only ever connected to a Windows XP PC
    (4) I always wait till its safe to remove the iPod
    (5) Bought it in Oct. '04

    hmmm.
    Scan the HDD.

Connect/mount the iPOD, and run chkdsk. (Ensure there's sufficient battery power or it's charging)

Yea I do, anytime I'm asked to download the latest software I do. I restored my iPod the other day and it seems to be ok but I'll keep an eye on it.
