Journalism Masters!

Sorry to just drop in from the Trinity forum, but quick question:

I've been shortlisted for the Journalism Masters in DCU and have an interview for it in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any idea what kind of stuff comes up in this? Do they ask for opinions/general knowledge on the media, or is it more about your experience and enthusiasm?

I emailed the school to ask them about it and they sent me a polite 'sorry-but-we're-telling-you-nothing' mail... getting a bit worried about it so any help at all would be muchos appreciated!

My friend did this interview last year. She didn't get in, but she got some feedback. They asked her a lot about what writing she'd done - talk about your college paper in undergrad and so on. I don't think you'd have gotten an interview if they weren't happy enough about that sort of think though. They asked her who her favourite journalist was and why - and I think they asked about some current affairs, like what did she think was the biggest story in the past few weeks and what did she think of the reporting on it.

They asked her why she wanted to be a journalist and what qualities she had that would make her a good one. The question she really messed up on was when they asked her what she'd do if she didn't get in - the right answer to that is "build up experience and try again next year!" so they know you're serious about it.

She was told she didn't get in because they weren't sure of her commitment to the course and to the career (she told them she'd been already accepted to another MA in UCD). I think they were also a bit wary of her lack of published material, but that wouldn't have mattered so much if she'd been more enthusiastic.

Just come across as serious about the MA and being a journalist, sound enthusiastic and so on. Don't let on if you've an interview anywhere else, make them think that is the only MA you'd ever ever consider doing and you'll apply for it again and again if you had to.

Thanks a million for that - I really appreciate it. :p

I really am serious about doing this course, and haven't applied for anything else (hopefully that won't backfire on me!). Been practising mock interviews for a few weeks now and covered most of the stuff you said so hopefully it works out! Fingers crossed!
