Did you apply for a job *with* (ie-to work for) Google or did you apply for a job *on* google(ie-using the search engine to find a job)?
If you applied for a job with google then the questions are used to establish how much you know and not getting them right or missing a few does not neccessarily mean that you will not go any further. I suppose its a way for the employer to make sure the CV they got isnt pure B**lsh1t and hence you wont totally waste their time in an interview.
Just hold out and wait for the call as its a tough question you ask and can only really be answered by the person who asked you the questions.

    cheers man,

i applyed direct on the google site, it was for a datacenter assistant

he told me that he wil be passing all the info gathered up to the hiring manager and i will hear back in a day or so

i wonder does this mean that he will decide if i get the job? or what

we must have some insiders here from google on the boards that can help...

Um, he certainly won't be offering you a job on the basis of a phone chat and tech test...most jobs in Google involve several telephone interviews before you come in to have a face to face interview.

Google jobs are quick tricky to get, I know some people who have gone for them and had all sorts of tricky questions thrown at them. Don't be surprised if it takes 6 or 8 interviews to get a job!

it will probably take that 4-6 phone interviews and then one/two peer-level face-to-face interview. Don't hold any big hopes, as the questions become a lot more difficult in final interview. And if you don't show them that you are a solid problem solver and show a little hesitation about questions you are asked you will probably not get the job. They're elitist company, and it seems that they are not in hurry to fill their roles. My friend was interviewed there for a datacenter technician starting 1,5 months ago and didn't pass. He has excellent technical knowledge but missed couple small things in problemshooting questions in interview

I know loads of people who went for goodle jobs and only 1 or 2 who got offers. Most were told they were not enthusiastic enough or that they didn;t want the job enough. You have to come accross as a complete google nut/freak/head and want to work there more than anything. good luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

That's mad, I know two people who went for that job and had three telephone interviews, one of them said to the HR woman "Look, just how many more interviews are you going to require?" and she said probably another two before the face to face....he told her (quite rightly) that that is an absolute joke of a way to recruit people and not to contact him again. They rang and emailed several times but he kept hanging up on them. Then a few months later sent him a PFO letter saying he wasn't suitable for Google!

yea it is abit mad alright, maybe i was to technical on the phone and they were shocked hehehehe :p

I had a phone interview and then an onsite with 3 different people before being told no thanks
As has been said the seem pretty elitest and the job I went for (software engineer) didnt sound all that good.
5 dev's in Dublin with remote managers, been there done that.

i had 3 phone interviews and 2 on site interviews then heard nothing for about 5 weeks and was then told no thanks! There so picky about who they hire. I wouldnt hold your breath for the job but good luck any ways

I've just had my first phone interview for a position there. A lot of questions on linux configuration, network files some subnetting.

For those of you that did an onsite interview, what types of questions were asked? Did it differ vastly from what you had experianced from the phone interview ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭A+-Guru

    @spss

thats what i would like to know, so i can be som what prepared for the interview

i mean its only for a datacentre technitican which involves changeing hardware etc... so i dont know why they are so picky in terms of being a geek to get in..you wont even use all your knowledge for the role...

Woody can you contribute anything to the format of the onsite interview?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭woodyg

The 1st onsite was split into an interview with 1Hr person 1 technician and 1 supervisor. They asked both technical questions and HR questions. The 2nd onsite was with 2 HR people and 1 team leader this was a strange interview as they asked some very random questions.

    Not weird puzzle ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭woodyg

There was a group puzzle to do on the 1st onsite which was monitered by HR. There looking into how people worked in a team, Who became the leader who just sat back and so fort.

2 groups off 3 but i heard from a source that they change the format quite often .Sometime its 1 big group sometimes its individual and sometimes its small groups.

They like to mix things up a bit

    Don't do evil is right.

Wooody you went for the field engineer role right?

I see that its still advertised on the site. So they STILL havent hired anyone for this role even after all this rigormarole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭woodyg

I was told that they gave the job to some 1 out of my group.
It wouldnt have suprised me though if the person left after all the sh*te to get the job!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭oneweb

One of my mates was told he didn't get the job (after several phone and 3 face-to-face interviews)... ...because he seemed to be too interested in leaving his current job!

    It is what it's.

Actually, the Google motto is "Don't be evil", which is a little different from "Do no evil". Anyway, thats off-topic, but there is an awful lot of crap talked about the company. Just my 2c.

jez if he got to 10 and got offered the job, surely it was worth his while turning up to meet a bunch of people, espec after all his trouble.

So A+- how did you do?

What kind of questions were asked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭BRM

It sounds to me from hearing friends and people on here talking about Google that they are brainstorming how to run operations in Ireland.

It really pisses me off when companies and agencies do this. You can bet they are picking peoples brains for information about the industry, and ways to implement IT policies.

From seeing some of the job specs advertised from Google its obvious they have a wealth of knowledge and CVs to draw upon. The more stages to interviews people go through the more information they will disclose, it’s a form of industrial espionage in my opinion.

You can be sure 90% of the time there is no infrastructure or immediate need for the position advertised.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth guys. Done 2 phone interviews for field service engineer and both went well. Did not hear anything back for a while so decided to call them and ask for feedback, they were unable to do this but said "we are not longer looking for people for that role"...well thanx a bunch for letting me know. That sort of craic really ticks me off, let me know if I'm not going any further but please don't leave it hanging...cause that is so f***in annoying!! Anyone else felt like this with good old Google?

When it falls down to HR generally its hit and miss as they are usually junior people who are unable to take accountability for their responsibilities. You aren't in teh company so they aren't too fussed.

I wonder if there are any figures on how effective this kind of HR-centric hiring method is. I've never got a job through an interview - always through word-of-mouth and actually through working freelance for a place for a while so they see my work style.

On the other hand, apparently when Aer Rianta (?) started using Israeli-invented aptitude tests (for untrained people) to sort out who they should train as pilots and air traffic control, their dropout rate dropped completely, because they were able to hire people with the right personality for the particular jobs.

It would be an interesting study, wouldn't it - look at jobs where people are hired through HR's pet methods and through other methods and see if there's any difference in the success rate.
