macro /extension tubes question

I am currently using a Canon 350D and looking for some kind of macro facility.
At present I'm thiking about the Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX DG (approx €300)
or possibly trying a Canon EF25 (€150) extension first and see how I get on with it.

My own feeling is that I'd be better off getting the Sigma than the extension but is the price difference worth it?

I'd like to hear from anyone who has had particular experience with Canon digtal slrs and macro lenses/ extensions.

The budget doesn't allow for the canon 100 macro at the moment.

I will be using it for general macro work, not specifically plants / insects.

what you could is get yourself a macro reversing ring. It basically lets you put the lens on backwards. Here is an example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Nikon-Fit-Reversing-Ring-for-Macro-Close-Up-Work_W0QQitemZ7572805391QQcategoryZ30035QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem This is the same place I bought mine from and I found them very good.

I'm always rambling on about my extension tubes these days but seriously, they've served me very well. Used them on my old EOS 600 and on the new 350D as well and they do the job just fine. With the three widths, it gives me a lot of options for different combinations with my lenses so I can choose how close I want to get. I'm sure some gear fanatic will tell you that they reduce the sharpness or something but...well... it's easier to get them first and then if you really get into macro, upgrade to a lens later on when you're really serious about it.

That sounds like a good option.
Can you let me know which tubes you use, are they Canon or some other make and also, what different sizes you use?
    Thanks.

They say jessop on the side - funnily enough I got them from Jessops... it was 60 gpb at the time, I think they are about 70 quid now, prolly about a hundred euros. Anyway they are canon fit and i got a set of three, 15mm, 25mm and 35mm I think.
