can't play avi's anymore

my comps suddenly stopped playin avi's, was grand playin them in media player till a few days ago, but now when it goes to open the file media player just freezes, i've tried opening it in a few other diff players too but they're the same, they just freeze up. any1 got any ideas? :confused:

had a simliar problem tried everything from removing/uninstalling codecs re-installing them.
Only solution was a format and re-install OS, although System Restore should do the job
