How late to go all in?

    Hey,

I was just wondering how late in a tournament should you wait before you have to go all in (in terms of your stack size, not time)? Should you not let yourself go under 5BB, or should you let it run down until you get somewhat decent hole cards?

Less than 10BB...first to enter pot ... any pair, AQ, AK or any live cards (preferably connected or nearly connected:) ) = All In, Chocs away Chaps, Tally Ho !

Dont let your chips get so low, compared to the other stacks, that even if you double up you still wont be in contention to win it. Whats the point of waiting for AA if u can only double from 3BB to 6BB? Always have your eyes on 1st place, you may feel foolish sometimes going all-in on 12BB's with 66 just to get two callers but it really was the best choice, most of the time.

~10BBs, but position is still important, as well as the action before you. For example, pushing UTG with 22 at a full table is not a great idea, but pushing from the cut-off with 72o if first to enter the pot is often ok (your main aim in that case is to win the blinds).

Position dictates alot, how many players at the table.

If the other criteria merit an all in move, 67o will do me ... how do you know you're going to get AJ soon ? :)

I'm just wondering because when I saw your first post I automatically thought "nah no way, I'd much rather A high" but then I paused for a second.

I think, all other conditions being equal, I'd rather A5o then 67o. It's not all that clear though.

I quite like pushing with low card in that situation such as 67 or 43 as very good chance they are live and as long as your not against a pir then your roughly going to be 40-60

In early position I'd choose 67o.

In late position I'd choose A5o.

In the early stages and you are down to ~10BBs its pushing time. Limping is not a option as you will be losing folding equity as your stack decreases.

If nearing the bubble and you have 10-15BBs push into the medium stacks (~20-25BBs), not the shorter stacks or the large stacks, of course this is tournament dependent and you may all only have 10BBs. Your cards dont really matter and at this stage you should be trying to set yourself up to go deep and take advantage of the players limping into the money. Remember, first in vig. is hugely important at this stage and attacking the right stacks.

I think at 7 1/2 BB's u can't really let yourself go any lower. If u double on on that you're on 15 BB's and safe for a good deal longer but if you let yourself slip to 5 BB's or so, even if u double up u only have ten BB's and ur still lookin over your shoulder

UTG = Under The Gun. First to act preflop. Just left of the Big Blind in the current hand.

Another factor about the number of players at the table, if there are lots of players left at the table, this means the bb per hand you are paying is less, so you don't have to be as desparate. So imagine you are on the button with 34o and 6 BBs, and there are 3 players at the table (including you). In this scenario you may need to be more aggressive than if you are at a full table and everyone has folded to you. You'd have the same hand, same number of BBs and the same number of people left to play, but you get to see the next 7 hands for free, and could even let the blinds go through you once depending on the aggressiveness of the table.
