Probably best to call and ask them about that particular problem.

Check their site for firmware upgrade.
Plug a monitor in and check whether it happens.
Check whether it happens in the BIOS. (Restore defaults if necessary)
Find owner and give him a kick in the shins.

is it a dell laptop by any chance?
reason i ask is because these have a software prog called Dell "quick set"which adjusts the screen/power save settings.these settings may need looking at.

one of these settings involves "Turn off display after.......?"

there should be an icon in the taskbar which if clicked will bring you to these settings

    hope this helps

    Opps...just seen its a fujitsu-siemens!!

Check the lid switch which turns the backlight off when you close the screen - maybe its stuck so the laptop thinks the screen is shut?

Where did you buy it from? Only a week old, should have no problem bringing it back to the store if it was like Harvey Normans or PC World. They will take a look and generally change it over on the spot. If this is happening on battery only its normally just a power setting.

If you read the OP's posts - you'll see it's second hand and not a Dell...

THe problem only occurs when you have it powering off the mains??

If so its a faulty main adapter!!

does a laptops lcd go off when the lid is shut or just the backlight?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

Depends on your settings... usually it's set to just go into standby when you close the lid, you can also set it to go into hibernation or do nothing

yeah but theres a little button that tells the bios is the lid open or not and turns off either the screen or backlight
