Peugeot 404: Where did they all go?

    Am amazed at the lack/shortage of Peugeot 404's here and in the UK.It was a good ,strong reliable car that sold 2.7 million during 1960 to 1975.In my country ( South Africa) they were like backsides,everyone had one at some stage or other and I gather it was the same in Aus.
    Have been looking around for one as my next project and cant even find a wreck ,never mind a good one.

    Any Ideas?

    I agree. I would love to see one again. It was my first introduction to Peugeot and it was a lovely comfortable car. Some of the neighbours had a few and I loved getting drives in them.

    Just like the 504 which succeeded it - their strength and durability was the cause of most of them going to premature grave as they were very popular with farmers and taxi drivers.

    I have been lucky to find a very good 504 which brings back all the memories of the 404.

    The 404 - pity modern Peugeots are not as cool as this car was back then.:(

    i'm sure I saw a 404 or 504 in a yard at ninemiletown just south of Callan co KK....visible from road, will check next time im that way.......

    theres a peugeot 504 in daily use on the cloughan shannonbridge road ,
    i meet him any time im on it.
    just met him today & its in good nick no dings or rust on it , an old fella driving and he dosent spare it either :)

    i saw a brown 504 parked up in on the portumna ,nenagh road a year ago, don't know where exactly as i was lost at the time!
    there was a mint green one in co. galway about 10-12 years ago,one owner,an elderly priest,used to see it trundling along at 35mph, his top speed.

    My uncle had a 404 estate, great huge car ! Very comfy indeed !

    Speaking of mint green, I saw a lovely mint green metallic 504 Convertible in Kilkenny ................sweet car indeed !

    Thanks Alfasudcrazy,Had a look at those and will keep monitoring.
    Contacted Peugeot Club in UK and found out why so few 404's.
    Virtually all the right hand drive 404's were made in South Africa which made shipping them to the UK prohibitively expensive.The French Factory only did the occassional run of RHD so thats why there are so many in Africa and Australia and so few in UK

    When I read the title of this thread my first thought was "Africa!" -
    seeing as that's where you are from made me laugh.

    I've been around Tanzania/Kenya/Uganda region quite extensively
    and was always amazed at the number of old Peugots, esp. 404s
    and the like, usually in white. French cars seemed to be the second most popular makes, after Toyota of course.

    My 504 gets lots of attention from Africans living here - it brings back memories of home to them I suppose. ;)

    Hheheh, yeah El Tel,I have also seen the most wonderful classics preserved all over Africa as actual transport"Thees ees not a classic, it ees my car",as someone pointed out, "Pushetsss" lasted fore-ever and probably led to their demise.And Toyota South Africa's foothold will be hard to beat
    My stamping ground was obviously SA, but also Mozambique,Angola,Kenya,Zambia and the Congo with the other odd side trips thrown in.
    Keep on meaning to ask BlueFiat850 if he lives near Craughwell? as there's a very nice Fiat 850 there.

    if you come across one and are thinking of buying make sure to check the rear chassis as they used to rot away to nothing. almost every one in ireland in the seventies had a tow hitch and when you stood on it the back wings would bulge in and out. they had the longest front coil-springs i've ever seen on any car and a terrifying thing to remove or fit. they had drum brakes all round with a servo so the brakes were very sudden :eek: . the 504 TI was a great car to go , mechanical fuel injection .95MPH in third was no problem :D. doing a clutch on PUGs was a hassle because of the torque tube joining the axle to the gearbox. it was easier to pull the engine :confused:

    There was a lovely 504 diesel in Durrow in April, guy reckoned it was the only running 2.3 diesel in Ireland and UK. that can't be right?

    He was wrong - there's a running one for sale in this week's Classic Car Weekly (page 39). I phoned about it yesterday but the seller was holding it for another buyer who was coming over from Ireland today to have a look at it...

    Thanks Dax. I own the 850, Triumph 2000, Lancia Dedra and the Fiat 127 GT in the shed, my brother owns the Wolseley Hornet, Merc 190 and a Fiat 126 round the back, and another brother has the Kadett Coupe Rallye...our mother is blessed with a lot of patience:D

    The 504 was built until about 3 or 4 years ago in Kenya. I know a guy who had friends of his working in the factory, operated by Marshalls. The Peugeot website did feature a link to Kenya. At the time they were building
    the saloon. It cost roughly the equivalent of 27,000 euros!!!!

    Also check out a link to Peugeot South America, one of the countries, I think Argentina is still building 504 but with a modified front end and rear.

    Just to let you know I’ve picked up a nice 504 in the UK the other day.

    How many do you think are in Ireland at the moment?

    Does anybody know any Peugeot specialists or parts people here(I live in Wicklow)?

    Since the world is going to end tomorrow I decided to see if there were any 404's out there for my ride to hell, and ran across this board - gotta love the internet.
    The '64 404 was my first car (cost $310.00, and bought with my paper route money) and perfect for a 16yo. I was the first of my friends to have a car and I must say that in the 8 months I owned it we put over 57,000 miles on it....absolutely tourtured miles for the 404, there wasn't a corn field, wheat feild, ditch, washed out bridge, dirt road, nothing that could stop it (although the wheat clogged up the radiator and slowed it for awhile). The sun roof offered many a unique hell raising oppertunities. We drove to the Mississippi River (19 hrs one way) just to spit in it, to Woodstock for the festival, to the Mexican 1000 to race it (we tured back in Texas, after 1100 miles, when I called my parents to let them know where we were headed). These long trips were non stop other than for .24 per gallon gas, and McDonalds burgers and the speed limits were 70 and the 404 took them all with out a hitch. The 404 was sold for $200 so that I could buy a '62 Austin Healy 3000 for $900.00, a high price for a used car according to my Dad, he was kinda right the Heally was a real sissy. The electrical system was a nightmare and the damn thing constantaly broke down.
    Of the 100's of cars I have owned since none have been put through what the 404 went through and to this day I miss it. And what better car that will stand up to the abuse of the journey to hell when the earth ends tomorrow. Why I bet the 404 would stand up to the Devil himself!
