I know there is another thread regarding this, but could we keep this up so we can get a good idea of the numbers for and against the hunger strikers staying?

If you want to explain your decision, do it in the other thread, this is just a poll

Should the Government grant asylum to the hunger strikers? 55 votes

    Yes
    0% 0 votes
    No
    9% 5 votes
    Undecided
    90% 50 votes

Voted no, they have no right to be demanding anything. Let them do what they want, its not our problem anymore.

IF they got there way alot of people would start doing similar which woint be good.

They went through the system and they werent deemed to qualify for asylum so thats good enough for me.

I voted yes. I find it depressing and a chilling indictment of 'New Ireland' that philanthropy and being any way generous at all is seen as a dirty word these days. If these people are willing to starve themselves to the point of death to stay in this (cold and rainy!) country, I think we should take a long hard look at the moral justification of sending them back.

Its not a moral issue..it has long term consequences for the entire country.
The No's have it by a crushing majority!!!

This has nothing to do with philanthropy, plenty of people are granted asylum if they deserve it, citizenship is one of the few markers of idenity left keeping most countries together so it needs to be enforced.

Where does the philanthropy end, we are already the new home to hundreds of thousands of new people, do you intend on inviting the entire world into Ireland? Because if you allow your system to collapse, and show its weakness through blackmail, in the real world you will have every chancer from the Congo to Calcutta on the next boat to an inner city near you.

Moral justfication? What, how about their moral blackmail? Why do people always feel as if it is the duty of everyone to look after the worlds poor? They are Afghanistanis, under no threat, so let their own country look after them, thats the point of being a citizen and having a government and thats why McDowell is staying strong on this one.

cos it'll just get confusing, and arguments will be going on in both threads. it makes more sense to use just the one...

a mod can add a poll to the other thread, so maybe that should happen and this one closed?
