Thinking about swapping the 19" CRT and getting an LCD.
What is important to look out for? Refresh time <8ms far starters but what about contrast and brightness? Also the max resolution - I'm hoping to get a 19" what's a decent resolution to use with a screen this size?
How important is a DVI input instead of VGA?
Any reccomendations between €300-€500, HD compatible would be nice, don't mind if it doesn't have a tuner as I can use a pci card.
    Thanks

HD compatible if you mean ones with HDCP are rare at the moment. If you just want a display that can handle HD resolutions then those are fairly common 720p is just 1280x720 pixels and 1080p is 1920x1080 pixels. A lot of widescreen displays support one or both.

DVI is preferable over VGA for the best picture quality but different people perceive quality in different ways e.g some cant tell the difference etc..

Be wary of response times a lot of the reported times are marketing tricks like interpreting the response time in another manner so as to make it sound better etc.

There is a very handy thread over at Anandtech that keeps track of the latest displays and offers some good suggestions for what kind of work you want to do and which display is the best for the job.

High Definition Content Protection, essentially hardware based DRM designed to "protect" the video signal from the HD source HD-DVD/Blu-ray on its way to the display. HDCP is digital so it can only be used with either DVI or HDMI and very few LCD computer displays support it.

But... so far none of the movie studios have actually committed to the image constraint token* for fear of alienating the large install base of HDTV's that do not feature HDCP (that includes the first wave of currently available HD-DVD discs) so in a fashion it doesn’t really matter for now but really its only a matter of time before they do.

*Basically if a HD-DVD or Blu-ray disc has the image constraint token and implements it you need a HDCP compliant display to view it in its full resolution otherwise it is downgraded to a resolution not much higher than existing DVD's.

As for general suggestions for 19" Dell do a decent line of displays I have there previous generation 19" 1905FP (latest 1907FP) and it is a solid display very good colours/contrast, not bad when it comes to games either. But the 19" models dont come in wide screen format only 20" or higher.
