So in the past week I have bought two more usb mice one is a kensington that had no software and the other is a microsoft one that I bought today I have connected it to my lapotop the light underneath it is on but it isnt working i tried the search for driver thing but it failed too.

Anyone else got an idea of what i can do to solve this painfull problem?

In regards the MS one uninstall an existing mouse software on the computer.

Download the latest Microsoft mouse software from this link - you will have to input your model number.

It sounds like something is wrong all right as even without the utility software installed the mice should have been detected.

I tried ur link but when i went to choose the os it only had mac os, yet in the sys req's it said xp home/pro?
Anyway im reckoning this is harder to solve than merely installing drivers something in the hcl or something is wrong a service stopped registry mistake??????

Is it possible to uninstall hcl?
    And if so reinstall it?

Also it appears the relevant drivers are impossible to find on google?
    Which is a bit odd????

    There isn't anything wrong the link above all you do is;
1)Pick type of product - mouse
2)Pick type of mouse - "IntelliMouse whatever"
    3)Select OS - Windows XP
    4)Select language - English

However something must be wrong with your setup as you don't need to install drivers for any USB mice. The actual basic required driver is integrated into Windows XP itself which is why you cant find it as it is not needed if your system was functioning correctly.

You should check your device manager your any yellow exclamation marks on devices indicating a hardware error in particular take a look at the USB controllers and double check there is no specific mouse software installed that could conflict with generic mice.

Finally do you have Windows XP service pack 2 installed ? you can check under the system properties general tab.

The mouse is an ms compact optical mouse 500 and it has only got drivers for mac on the website for that particular mouse.

There is a yellow mark in device mgr, its on unknown devices.

    Yes I have sp2 installed.

The only mouse software I have installed is for the touchpad.

Still stumped if anyone can help?

In device manager, remove everything under universal seriall bus controllers. Then restart and plug in mouse. See if it detects it. If not, select the unknown device and choose "update driver", insert your windows CD and see if it installs a driver for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    uninstall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

And when I uninstall them will they be automatically reinstalled?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    yes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

Ive tried all of the above (though I have a product recovery cdrom which came with the laptop not a usual xp os cd) with no luck.

The touchpad driver is under mouse and other pointing devices, this is right yes?

    Yep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

Any other ideas what might be the solution?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Try installing the mouse on another PC. If it works, then the problem lies with your PC. If it fails, mouse is prob faulty. Just make sure you follow install instructions fully.

It works on a win95 laptop and a win xp pc.

Then the problem exists on your laptop. Could be your OS is a bit screwy, in which case I'd do a nice fresh reinstall of windows.

I think a reinstall is a very last resort too time consuming.

Try it with some Linux live-cd like Knoppix or something on your pc. If that doesn't work either it'd definately be a hardware issue.

The usb ports work fine wit all other devices.
The mouse works fine on other computers it's most likely a software error.

I have copied mouhid.sys hidpars.sys hidusb.sys etc from another machine running xp into my own sys32/drivers folder with no diffrence.
However I found windows driver foundation wont start in services is this anything to do with my problem does anyone know?

If you have to start messing with USB drivers like that I doubt you'll fix it. Any time I've seen USB drivers mucked up, I almost always needed to reinstall the OS. You've been a week at this already.
