eMachines XP COA

I have an eMachines PC with a XP Home COA sticker, but I've lost the recovery disc.

I have an XP Home Retail and OEM disc (copied) and am trying to install them using the code from the COA sticker but it's not having it. I vaugly recall something about large OEM's using the BIOS to interfere with the otherwise straight-forward cd-key process.

Anyone know how I can get the machine back to a legitimate state using the key from the COA sticker?

    Cheers :-)

Couldn't you contact eMachines and ask them for a CD ?

Anyhow it looks like the key emachines provide is linked to an OEM WinXP Home copy which is why the other retail didn't work.

As for the OEM edition that may or may not work check the service pack level of the original eMachines install does it match the SP level on the OEM disc if not then slipstream the same SP into the OEM disc and try it again that might allow you to install as some of the OEM editions need to be the same SP level to accept the key.

Also I haven't really looked into it but I wouldn't be surprised if you still have access to the installation .cab files on the HD it could be possible to create your own boot/install disk. Search the HD for an I386 folder which would contain the needed files.

    Slipstream guide
Making XP CD from recovery disc/files link 1, link 2 or Google search for create xp install disc from i386 folder on HD.
