Did that test myself a few years back. Might have changed but the one I did involved:
    • words - know the differences e.g. conglomerate/agglomerate
    • maths - e.g. 5 / 0.005
    • flowcharts - determine the color of a snooker ball by following the logic
Might be other tests - can't remember.
On my software FAS course they didn't pick the top results from that test. Rather they choose some who did really well and some who barely passed. The result was a lot of trouble on the course - people either didn't have a clue or others thought the course was easy. Anyway, a decade on and I'm one of the very few working in IT software from the class.

Am just finishing up the course at the moment. The entrance exam was harder than anything on the course. It is as nolanger said. The fIrst part was a test on words, such as synonyms and antonyms. Clue: look for programme like words.

The test comes on a paper booklet to which you insert the answer sheet. You turn each page and move the sheet over by a column for each test page, as the questions line up to boxes on this sheet. Even though you're not supposed to peak at the next section of the test, be advised that you do all the pages for each test. A quick peek can't hurt to make sure you've completed that section.

The second part is all about maths. Many small mathematical problems. Mainly with decimal points , and all multiple choice. Some logic ones too, as in true or false.
Quick hint, dividing by say, .0001 makes the answer big, if that makes any sense, so a quick look at the possible choices should narrow it down.

Last section is 4 flowcharts with questions on the data that's missing on some nodes.
A process of elimination can help here, or the similar way one tackles a sudoku puzzle or a quadratic equation.

Do bring a pencil and paper, as it really helps to not have to keep all the parts of a problem in your head.
Do bring a watch to keep a track of your answer time as you will have to turn off your mobile.

There were some answers written on the test book, some seemed right, if you're stuck they might help?

As for the syllabus, they moved the award from fetac to city and guilds. http://www.cityandguilds.com/38443.html?search_term= might give you an idea of what standard is expected by the end of each module.

There's also an interview if you pass the exam. Even if you don't pass the exam there may still be places available as it is a very hard test and they don't seem to fill it based soley on the exam reults.

A good interview, showing enthusiasm and a pre interest in computers would be an advantage. And all things being equal, a suit can't help but impress.

    good luck.

major thing to note with this aptitude test - you do not lose points for an incorrect answer

leave the last 5 mins for just ticking boxes

Can't say for sure as it might have changed but you must clock in/out and if you miss a day your FÁS weekly paymenty gets reduced. A ½-day on Friday and the other days are up to 4 PM. Hope you don't get my instructor - he thought the brightest guy in the class had a disability and wouldn't recommend him to employers!

I did this test. Didint get the interview. Found it extremely difficult.

No real way to prepare for it... unless you like reading dictionarys and doing fractions.
