i'm building a new pc and it will mainly be used for gaming, just wondering which processor to go for.

    Intel® Pentium® D 950 Dual Core Processor (3.40GHz, 800MHz fsb, 2x2MB cache)

    or

    Intel® Viiv™ technology -Intel® Pentium® D 950 Dual Core(3.40GHz,800MHz,2x2MB)

    thanks :)

If you're gaming, go AMD. Cheaper, and they whip the Intels.

    AMD ftw!

Yeah if it's a self build AMD.

Just to note those two Intel CPU's you mention are the same the Intel Viiv bit is nothing more than a marketing tag for HTPC setups.

You'd be mad to put a netburst cpu into a HTPC given the heat/power requirements. Conroe/a64x2 are much more suitable.

For gaming, AMD are the better option, but could change in the next 3 months.

New AMD chips are released May 23rd, which may bring a price drop to older chips. I think the industry is getting the feeling that a sales war between conroe/athlon may lead to cheaper prices on the higher end parts, athlon prices have barely budged for nearly a year because Intel just can't compete and isn't putting the tech/research into its current line of processors.

Thats like buying a Yaris mainly for off-road driving (bit extreme example). You've said you're priority is gaming, and if it is, then AMD is the better chip, if you're getting an Intel, then obviously gaming is not the priority and getting an Intel chip is.

it also depends on what kind of a graphics setup you are going to go for, what form factor you want, how much you want to spend on cooling, are you going to be overclocking etc etc...

but in any case unless money is the main concern, i would have to say go for the intel chip if you can afford it

go for amd there way better and cheaper and get a 64-bit one, windows vista in one and it will ship as 32 or 64 bit

i'd echo the general consensus here. buy AMD. i know you've stuck with intel, but right now AMD are trouncing them in the gaming market. you could wait to see what intel does in the future with conroe, but i'm assuming you want to buy now

The Pentium d 805 overclocked out performs an fx-60 and only costs a jaw dropping 130 euro, which is a fraction of what the fx-60 would cost

I'll say it again amd ftw!! your intention to buy intel anyway may indicate your main concern isnt gaming, but having an intel

i all hear what your saying about AMD and gaming but i've always gone for Intel in the past and never had a problem with overclocking them either and i already have an Intel mainboard purchased, a Gigabyte GA-G1975X :D
