What are your guilty pleasures?

You know, the time diverting thing that you do, that you enjoy, but that you don't really talk about down the pub. It's so bad, it's good/i shouldn't really/it's not at all productive/god, i should be studying.....time spent listening to classical music doesn't qualify as a guilty pleasure, but time spent practising burping a Mozart sonata does.

Because confession is good for the soul, i'll start the ball rolling.
    • Reading Stargate Fan Fic, it's those uniforms....it's all about the uniforms for me. :o
    • I really like the 'snap' noise the holders in a ring binder make when they close, sometimes i sit at my desk and open and close them for a few minutes.

    Oh nothing. I'm perfectly normal.

    Sometime I smell people's hair.

This bloody forum. It's a black hole that sucks away all my time (shut up, shut up, I know I don't know what I'm talking about and there are loads of physicists just waiting to correct me, I don't care!)

Also, spending time in other people's apartments is another way of wasting my time. It's not productive or very exciting, but it still eats into time I should be using to do other things..

IRC is actually the worst. It won't go away.

Either that or just staring into space while pretending to study.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Aye this forum, I've managed to limit myself with bebo to almost nothing. I hardly send any emails so they only require a quick read. Actually I've limited myself on boards too of recent. Haven't kept up at all with the posts. I've snuffed or postponed all my other potential interests (judo, boxing, brewing, banjo, guitar) long ago when studyin for schols.

So i'd say my only time-waster really now is... my bed. I can't get enough of it. I'm there about 12 hours a day, which is quite an amount really.

Every time I see the title of this thread I just start laughing to myself. Uncovering the Boardsies' hidden pleasures...

I don't really think I have any. However, I have a feeling that Angry Banana will now list about thirty-two cases of phenomena, whence I obtain guilty pleasure.

The kingdom of loathing not guilty, just funny as hell

    In no particular order:

    - This board
    - Staying up until 1am to watch old Star Trek TNG episodes on Sky
    - Pulling the strings on my badminton hoodie. And then chewing them.
    - Playing air piano
    - Andrew :D

Have done this :o It's the only Star Trek I really like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

Yeah it really is the best. I like the later Voyager episodes (basically from when Janeway cuts her hair!) but TNG just has way better characters. And aside from the first two and parts of the last season, the plotlines were pretty decent.

Plus Picard was the the first of many old men I had a crush on during my teenage years :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

noe DS9 is by far the best startrek, its the only one with decent long running plot lines...(though s04 enterprise was v. good)

TNG is second best for one off ep's being cool(Data ftw).....

    Voyager being plain mank........

I lost lots of my TNG collection though :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 887 ✭✭✭wheresthebeef

DS9 was the worse of all. Good lord, what where you thinking.
    Voyager is THE Trek!!!

A nice one is a bottle of dawn strawberry milk, and an hour of skipped sociology lecture spent on a leather couch in d'olier street.

it has to be thrash tv - Judge Judy, Murder She Wrote, Quincy M.E., Diagnosis Murder

favourite tv distraction at the moment is:

    Eye for an Eye

its on one of the random satellite channels, and metes out 'justice with a difference'.

in one of the classic shows a drycleaner was found guilty of ruining a carpet handed in by a customer. The customer won the right to thrash the drycleaner's home as a result to a value of the ruined carpet. the thrashing of the drycleaners house was shown.

at the moment it seems to be the ultimate form of televisual entertainment

    Playing Eve Online

Monitoring about 8 different forums using my laptop when I should be studying. This is basically the problem; all of my notes are on my laptop but so is instant net access! It's like this temptress enticing me when I should be concentrating on my Optimization and Fourier maths studying. In fact I should be studying right now!

Two forums, both alike in dignity*,
In fair boards.ie, where we lay our scene..

    *not entirely true :p

This Hermione*/crash relationship has really broken down the barriers between the UCD,D and TCD forums, it has to be said. But will it end in tragedy?

    Find out next week..

Yes, we are that great. And no :p

Edit: Actually, you could probably call the trinity board one of my guilty pleasures :)

Buffy and Angel reruns. I've seen every minute (except for one episode of Angel, which irks me, because I'm actually that OCD), I can quote entire episodes from season 3 of Buffy, and yet I still love rewatching them. Just...not the last two years of Buffy. They were pretty ****.

Buffy - one of my guilty pleasures is spending/wasting time pricing DVD box sets on the internet. I'll take the plunge this summer and invest in....*drum roll* season 1! At this rate i'll have them all 7 seasons by 2016.

(it's only 'once more with feeling' that i'd approach word perfect-ness for)

Actually, here's a DVD related guilty pleasure - watching tv eps/films on DVD, then the next day watching them again with the 'special feature' commentaries. Oh, the thrill of hearing the costume designer explain their thinking behind that particular choice of fabric....

Whatever happened to that idea of a Giles spin-off set in England. 'Ripper' they were going to call it.

Anyway, neither Buffy nor Angel came anywhere close to Firefly if you ask me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

I'd only want the first three seasons of Buffy, maybe the fourth (Hush was legend, what a great score). 5 onwards sucked cock Dawson's Creek style. Magic addiction? Goo-spitting aliens? Marti Noxon is a vile, crack-smoking whore and should be burned at the stake.

Angel was ok, bit meh in places.

Still, The X Files rules all.

    I'd rank them Buffy>Firefly>>>Angel.

Buffy pips Firefly at the post for the character development, and some of the really freaky stand alone, monster of the week eps. (eg, 'hush' like Pet mentioned).

d say with another few seasons, Firefly could've won that one. In fairness, how well did you really know for example Xander after just one season?

Hmmmm, i think Firefly would have developed into an enjoyable Space Romp, there wasn't really the same scope for change in the characters that there was in Buffy, Buffy season 1 is a school kid who happens to be good with a wooden stake, Buffy season 7 has saved the world a few times, lost her mother, died herself, discovered that what she really wants in a man is for him to be a vamp, gained a little sister from no where and grown up a lot.

Firefly would have had to rely on the dreaded flashbacks to give us that kind of change, not being earthbound (in any meaning of the word) the ship traveled to the next story, in Buffy the story had to be brought to Sunnydale and integrated into the Scooby gang's existence.

But, all said, the last ep of Buffy was dire.

    So so so very true.

They had only one season, so assuming they would have needed lots of flashbacks for character devlopment and changes is a massive assumption. To counter that we could look at the episode where shepard book gets injoured and they end up on the cruiser, events like that give a glimpse into a persons life without the need for flash backs at all. They can always travel to different people's home planet and be imbrawled in some story line associciated with their past e.g. Inara's old friend who run's the whore house, it also allowed further devlopment of Mal and Inara's relationship(however ****ed up it might be).

There was one episode of Angel i really liked, which was when Spike went to the city after him and was watching him do his thing giving an excellent commentry on the whole affair, quite entertaining. (and i assume ye've noticed he's in smallville now? Dr. Milton Fine, aka AI robot guy....)

You lot should be guilty for watching Buffy :p

    i concur.

    ...marry me?

I sadly confess that I'm the same, having watched that episode approximately 17,000 times. And I'm pretty sure I can physically act out the entire final act of "The Wish" (where they all die at the end, damn cool scene), fight scenes and all. Damn, I sound nerdy, but it's really only Buffy that I'm this obsessed with. I'm usually pretty normal...I swear!

I love Firefly too, I'd probably rank them Buffy > Angel > Firefly simply on the basis that I got far more enjoyment from 5 decent seasons of Angel than I got from one excellent half-season of Firefly, but if it had survived

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Hmm..I'd still like to burn her at the stake, but for that, I'd burn her quickly and mercifully.

Buffy has become my study procrastination. seeing as various channels have started showing the early episodes now, any day i didn't make it into college, i could generally be found watching it.

Hrmmm must rewatch Firefly methinks - also, for those who are fans, from upclose, Jewel Staite (Kaylee) is even cuter :) and she did ask me for advice on where to go out in Dublin :D
