problem with Desktop to PC connectivity

    Greetings!

    Wondering if someone has any pointers or suggestions,

    I'm having a problem with connectivity between my laptop & Desktop PC

    I've recently moved house and don't have access to broadband. My friend next door has just gotten magnet Broadband, and has kindly given me the access code for the wireless router. My Laptop is working fine with his wireless presently.

    Problems;

    1. I've connected a Cat5e cable from my Laptop to my Desktop, and have manufactured a cross-over cable, since I have no hub. The computers are 'seeing' each-other and the shared documents are showing-up on the laptop, but not the Desktop.
    The message '100mb speed, but limited connectivity is showing on both computers.
    Looked up changing WINS settings from TCP/IP to NETbios, but I think it's a red-herring.
    Question; Do I need to change IP address or subnet mask?

    2. I'd also like to connect the desktop to the internet via the eithernet cable and laptop, how do I go about this?

    I've done alot of research and have followed resource links on boards to no avail. I have tried to explain in as much detail as I can, and will gladly elaborate further if anyone can help...

    Frustrated, but not beaten,
    P

    OK. Set the desktop ip to 192.168.1.10 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.11

    Set the laptop to 192.168.1.11 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway (your neighbours wireless router ip)

    Make sure Simple File Sharing is enabled on both machines (Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View tab - last option).

    Access the desktop by going to the desktop's name (Start - run - \\computer_name). That should sort out your file sharing issues.

    You may have issues with connection sharing through the laptop but you might be able to bridge the wireless connection and the ethernet connection.
