is it ok to pull out my p4 2.66 processor and swap, for either a 2.8 or 3.0 ghz processor ? and not have any problems ?
i have two machines, and i am thinking of swapping cpus, will anything happen, or is it just a straight swap ?

if they are the same socket number there should not be a problem !

get the socket number of both BOards and give it a lash

It shouldnt be a problem if both boards are the same (i think socket 478 in your case).

Depends if both support the FSB as well. The 2.66 may well be in a 533mhz FSB board, while a 2.8/3.0 usually use an 800mhz FSB

One extra thing to the above comments is that you may need a BIOS update. Check with mainboard vendors website.

It's not as straightforward as simply swapping them, as I found out to my displeasure earlier this year.

I had a socket 478 Celeron and swapped it with a 3.2Ghz P4 - worked fine. Owner of P4 then had the audacity to request it back, so I sourced a new P4 on e-bay - wouldn't work. Sourced a P4 3.0Ghz - worked fine.

You need to find the model of chip (Northwood, Prescott) and see if the motherboard supports it.

It's a 533mhz bus system, so you need to make sure whatever you get is socket 478 and uses a 533bus, not an 800bus (fastest chip is a p4 3.06ghz).
