I have been on to sky and they say that there is no launch date for skyhd in Ireland at the moment and that any Irish customers that have registered and are booked in for May 22nd won't be getting anything, guesstimate is mid June

Has anyone else heard of this?

I received a confirmation letter today for HD install on Friday 26th May.

I have an install date of 2nd June - confirmed by post last Friday

I was told this too (that its not released here)... about 3 weeks ago.

I was just speaking to them. It seems demand across the pond can't be met so they have put a block on Ireland to service the UK.

Rediculous that they don't have enough hardware to meet demand.

I originally ordered and coughed up €450 on the 10th of April and got an install date of the 25 of APRIL!!! Needless to say nothing arrived on the day and it was resheduled for the 13 of May. I got a call on Friday saying there would be no install because of a shortage of supply. He wouldn't reshedule because he had no date for the Irish launch. It's quite unbelievable! He thought it would be mid June at least which means probably end of June, which means no HD world cup, disaster. I seem to remember the prelaunch letter saying first come first served or was I mistaken?

Will sky still service you if you buy your own HD decoder independently or do you have to go through sky?

Ive heard that in Comet in england you can colect you box and self install, all sky do is update your card.

    Hey all,

My first post in this forum.
Just wondering if anyone has heard about skyireland.ie (they run all the SKY kiosks in several shopping centres Swords/Drogheda) who have being taken deposits for a few months. I booked mine with them (and paid a 50 euro deposit/booking fee same as in the UK) the first week of april. All along they reckoned the earliest installs in Ireland would be early June.
    Any thoughts??

As far as i know they are just another sky retailer with no direct connection to sky.

were you speaking to someone in the HD dept? they are the only people who deal with it, all other departments know nothing and will either transfer you to someone else or make something up.

When i called to book my HD installation, i was told this by 2 different people, one in customer services and one in sales. i eventually got put through to the HD dept. who booked me in for next Monday.

This is all a bit confusing to me, I rang up yesterday and ordered HD, however the instillation date I was given was the 26 of August.

Do you think i should ring up again and request to speak to the HD department? I just can't understand how yours is being done so fast.

i ordered it the day it went on sale to the general public, (13th april) if you booked an install, you were speaking to the HD dept, as they are the only people who can process an order.

I've had dealings with skyireland.ie in the past. I got my fingers burnt getting Sky+ when dealing with Sky directly (kept getting the brush off, waiting for months), but these guys got me sorted straight away and they def know their stuff.

Also any time I've had issues with my Sky account, I've gone into their office, they've got directly onto sky there and then and sorted my probs. They seem to have a bit of clout, far as I can tell.

Good to know for anyone considering getting sky, in my experience independent retailers always give better service than sky direct and i guess these guys would have some influence since I would imagine they create a lot of business for sky.

Well I suppose its also the fact that if you do crappy installs and give crap customer service, they will come to you and give out and pester you, etc etc. :D

Where as sky are so big that they dont give a sh1te.

    Scary,

are you adding a box, ie multiroom?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭scary

    No have multiroom already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭DigiDec

I didn't think you needed a new card, I thought they just switched on the HD channels.

New box - new card. Got my card last Fri. for my May 22nd HD install. See review of Sky HD http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/17/skys_hd_box_review/

What I meant was if you have multiroom and already have 2 viewing cards why would you need a third?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

Cards are linked to specific digiboxes

For anyone who gets their SKY HD box installed. Can you let me know how long the HDMI cable is that comes with it? Or does anyone know this for a fact already?

got my written confirmation also , 23rd may.
    Looks good to go

I just had a long conversation with a rep in Sky HD who told me that there is an actual block in the computer system preventing any booking for Sky HD being made in Ireland.

He said the earliest he would be able to get HD service to me would be late August when they reopen there diary which will happen in the coming week. The only reason they are doing that is to keep the money coming in. THey have taken over 200 000 orders already and realise they are pissing off denied customers so want to keep that money coming in even if install dates are not for another couple of months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭subfreq

Sorry for the follow up post so quickly but the best shout on this thread is to contact skyireland.ie. They still have a few HD boxes available of the shipment that they have been alloted. Installation should be first week of June if all goes to plan but Sky UK have ballsed this up to epic proportions and there are no garuntees of any delivery dates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Was in armstrongs today who said launch date is delayed because of a software issue in the box, the boxes are physically in the warehouse but cannot be released until this is sorted out.

That might be a reference to the MPEG-4 chip and the fact that it doesn't work. A known issue for over 6 months but Sky failed to act on it effectively.

yeah, I remember reading that mpeg4 issue on another forum.

New hardware acting a bit wonky... did anyone say XBOX 360?

At least if there is a problem, they're holding onto it til the issue is fixed.

I got a call from the installer today to confirm that i have a landline for mondays install, so it looks like it is definately going ahead.....
