When I play files on real player it sometimes uses up a lot of cpu and causes the file im watching to slow down. Is there anything I can do to stop this. If I freed up some memory by deleting stuff would this help? Also Im thinking of buying an external dvd burner and I was just wondering if I burned these files(the ones I watch on real player) to a dvd would I be able to watch them on my tv using a dvd player? Thanks.

What sort of videos are they for example the codec & file type e.g. avi or .mkv etc ?

Real videos such as .rm or .ram aren't usually very CPU demanding.

As for the DVD question yes with a DVD burner you can convert the video's into MPEG2 and burn them to a DVD which will be playable in your standalone player.

Ahh okay if thats the case they are most likely MPEG4-ASP files if they are using the .avi container as such Real is not the best player for such content.

Here is a simple enough way to get better performance download FFDShow - FFDShow is a directshow audio/video decoder that supports many formats.

Install it and leave everything at the defaults though un-tick post processing when it comes to that. Now open the files in Windows Media Player and they should play smoothly alternatively you can use MPC as well which is a very good video player.

I recommend media player classic for playing media files, it uses sod all resources and you can install the realplayer codec so can watch those too, been using it for ages.

Try this software for real media content :

    Real Alternative 1.48
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

Some advantages compared to RealPlayer :

    - Quick and easy install
    - It's easy to make an unattended installation
    - Proper uninstallation
    - No background processes
    - Use a player of your own choice
    - Low on resources
    - No advertising, no registration forms, nothing annoying

For any other content I usually use VLC. More Info at :
