Hi, I live out in the sticks where there is no broadband and the connection is poor and basically despite a new computer with a surge protector I keep losing connection. I play on PPP and sometimes they are at fault but mainly I think it is my connection. My play is improving and it is beginning to cost me money as well as putting me on tilt. My question is: is there any site out there that offers protection against this as it is driving me mad? Apologies if the question has been asked before.

If you keep dropping connection there is nothing much any poker site can do for you Pat. There should be no reason, outside of your own settings, for this to happen. I'd suggest getting in touch with the support guys from the people you bought your system from or with support at your isp. When I first set up I had a similar problem and the guys at Eircom.net were able to give me an extra initialisation code for my modem that sorted the problem out. Hope this helps.

pokerstars will add 120 seconds to your timer on your first disconnect , 60 second on the second one...during a turney , don't know about cash games...

btw a surge protector is more light to cause disconnects than solve them....you could also try connecting a slower speed , might make things more stable...

I assume you have tried other sites because with the greatest respect to PP the tribecca network is the worst for connection problems I know of.

one piece of advice... avoid Eircom broadband like the fcuking plague. Ive had it for about three months and i disconnect on average once every 10 to 15 minutes. The connection is absolutely rubbish. Im changing over to NTL on wednesday.

I have Eircom and it's fine. I'm sure it varies.

It could just be my area but everyone I've talked to has had major problems with Eircom. Everytime our house phone rings the internet cuts off, and between 7-10pm im lucky if I have continous connection longer than 15 minutes

I assume your using dialup as you've no bb. If sharing the line with phones it could be someone trying to get through to your number or someone in the house trying to dial out.

Rory- if you disconnect when the phone rings, make sure you have the correct filters for all equipment connecdted to p;hone sockets.

oh-one other thing - if you are using a netopia router, make sure the dhcp lease (for the private ip) isn't set to a low timeout. I reset mine to 99 days, rather than 30 minutes or so the router had as its default (my vpn connection kept dropping)

Haven't actually, might try pokerstars as they offer some form of protection. BB is not available in my area maybe Eircom can spend some of the €112 million profit they made last year to upgrade their services.

If you're using Dialup and have Eircom call management services then you need to change your location settings/dialing rules to disable Call waiting services -
    - Eircoms attempt to be helpful is dropping your ISP connection. Set Disable call waiting and you should keep your connection and an incoming call will just get an engaged tone, or divert straight to call answering.

I have Irsh Broadbands Ripwave. Without fail after 10 minutes or so I get cut off from PPP. It is highly annoying !
My signal strength is usually the max and signal quality middle to upper end of bar. Is this to do with ripwaves upload speed or Tribeca ???

Used to play pokerstars with my dialup many moons ago and it was ok 90% of the time. Of course things may be different now with even more users but it has always seemed to handle load very well.

Pokerstars handles most things well, site traffic, customer service, nice tourney structures, most things.
Some places have tables where u can get disconnect protection, if u get disconnected in a hand, u are deemed all in. (i avoid this big time as they are open to abuse) but at least u wont lose what u have put in the pot in these cases if u DQ.

I used to have eircom broadband, and generally it was ok, but occasionally it cut off or me, and after i lost my 3rd big pot, i changed to NTL and its been fine.
