Practical Photography tends to have quite a lot of good hands on advice for beginners, both for kit and for actually trying to spot photos and general inspiration. I bought this month's issue and it's got soem suggestions about shooting landscapes in different lighting situations, as well as an article about squirrels in your local park, if that's your bag. It also has some photoshop articles which I've yet to look at closely but I think they look quite useful and fairly simple explained.

I used to buy amateur photographer but it got a bit repetitive and ended up with mostly news about what new kit was coming out, what famous photographer had died, where in england (and england only) you could go and see exhibitions, and a smattering of user portfolios but not much in the way of inspiration for actually going out and doing something yourself. But it's a personal preference I suppose.

Amateur Photographer and Practical Photography usually, then anything else that tends to catch my eye when they're not in.

Digital Photo is the one mag I buy every month for it's excellent cover CD of Photoshop tutorials. It also has excellent advice for beginners and in straight-forward english too.
