I was on the CorkJazz website today and they've already announced a few additions that should be playing <subject to contract>
    JOE LOVANO NONET
    with 'Birth of the Cool'

    JIMMY SCOTT
    & The Jazz Expressions

    RANDY WESTON
    & his African Rhythms Trio

    COURTNEY PINE

    HARLEM GOSPEL CHOIR

    HIROMI

    http://www.corkjazzfestival.com/
    <make sure you're over 18 :p>

Courtney Pine should be worth a look. Also I'm a huge <not literally> fan of Birth of the Cool, is Lovano's a reworking of the Davis record?

Any news, ramblings, criticism/praise of previous/next Cork Jazz?
    Rant here!

Ack i hate Courtney Pine, might just go to his set purely to heckle him and throw pinecones at him! :p

Hmmm, that'd be worth a look, its a fantastic record alright, seeing it performed live would be pretty amazing (as long as they don't f**k it up! :p) Don't suppose Birth of the Cool are just the name of a group that'll be playing with him perhaps? I'd be surprised (but happy) if its otheriwise.

Missed the last two Cork Jazz Festivals, unfortunately my Granddad's birthday often falls on the same weekend so thats unfortunate, nothing will stop me this year though! Was it good last year actually?

oh im never goin back there...well maybe.

last time i went we got there at six in the morning (we thought the buses would be packed). in fairness we saw some pretty decent jazz in the main complex (i really liked that french band..too drunk to remember their name).

after that we were so tired and drunk. Then at about 6pm we were sober so we went to get drunk again!
Then, we lost our tickets to the venue...had great craic in the bluegrass/rockabilly bars around the city though.

i'm just moaning because we had to spend 7 hours in leisureplex. The bouncer wouldn't even let us take a nap (he was very weird, had a cork/cockney accent) And at this stage we were REALLY hungover.

so we had been awake for 27hrs straight, even tried sleepin in a nearby field!
So you can see why my memories are scarred of the whole event- the only thing that was quality was the music - which i would say is the important thing.

Why?! I thought some of his reggae records were a bit 80's cheese tbh, but his version of Donna Lee on soprano sax is a joy. I don't know what he's been up to lately though.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, I'd love to hear the album live though so here's hoping. Apparently way back at the first few live performances of the Birth of the Cool it was a spectacular failure.

Hmmm... hard to answer that one, guess i've only ever seen him on tv and never saw him do anything remotely interesting new or well... good. I know he has some talent as a musician but i just see him in those commercial tv jazz shows that are on every now and again e.g. that British Jazz thing and it was just horrible. They slaughtered numerous standards and did that whole special guest thing for each individual song. (kinda reminded me of when i saw Jamie Cullem) That according to him was meant to represent jazz, that he represented jazz and that he was trying to drag it into the mainstream.

I'd also be more inclined to rate an artist on their own material as opposed to covers but i would agree that he has talent as a musician but i just plain dont like the guy!

Fair enough, I'll accept your opinion!
    <I'll prove you wrong :p>
Anyway... Yep, on the bright side Joe Lovano should be playing some of the Birth of the Cool. According to allaboutjazz his group usually plays Boplicity, Move, and Moon Dreams <damn, maybe no Venus De Milo or Jeru> So sounds good!

Well you can at least make me admit that i'm incredibly ignorant in relation to the music of Courtney Pine and that my findings are purely based on pretty much one interview in that BBC British Jazz thing but I'm right damn it! :p

Class, Lovano sounds really promising. I've only ever heard him on Lyric Fm but hes always impressed me, been meaning to get some of his stuff. Any idea when announcements will be made for others?

I'm too sure. I was just browsing a few days ago and just decided to check, not realy expecting any news, but Boom! There ya go, a few promising acts already. I'd say we've just gotta keep our eyes peeled! I'd love to hear Manu Katché's group, Neighbourhood was excellent.

Has anyone else got any predictions/wants?

    New news.

If you peruse the acts signed to play you'll be grateful to see the return of the impeccable Lou Donaldson to Ireland <played in Vicar Street some time ago, and played a brilliant South of the Border>.

It's gonna be a good festival I think.

Pity about Freddie but a great festival line-up

Lou Donaldson being the highlight for me
Looking forward to seeing Bradford Marsalis too and also Laura Izibors gig
Fans of quality left-field hip-hop might enjoy People Under the Stairs aswell

In comparison to last year's though its a pretty poor line up (though last year thad the whole city of culture slosh to up the lineup) I'm well disappointed that Hubbard cancelled, i even stopped dancing.

Bar lovano there's noone im really too bothered to see and dont think ill head down probably too late to get lovano tickets now anyway, unless i change my mind.
just checked it out and it seems tickets are still available- Bugga!
    Please someone (per/dis)suade me!
