I saw some RAM on e-bay and it appeared cheap enough.

Where is the best place to buy RAM, and how do I know what to ask for

Do I need to know the make of the PC?

What else do I need to know before I buy?

    thanks.

(Im no computer genius as you may have gathered by now):(

crucial.com/uk - use their memory tools to identify what RAM you need. Their prices and delivery are OK as well.

Another vote for shop4memory.com (Irish based I think) and free delivery :)

I could go for a memory upgrade but am a complete n00b to this stuff.

I have 2x512mb, I've forund compatible RAM, my system has a max of 4GB. Can I have 2x1GB and 2x512MB on the same board? Or does all the RAM need to be the same size and type?

Ebay is as good as anywhere, I've just got 1GB for €35, the same memory would have cost €124 from Shop4Memory. Most sellers will be able to confirm compatibility for you if you send them the make and model of your PC.

An extreemly embarrasing question for a 25 year old to be asking...... but where do I find the model number? All I can see is 'Philips' and 'iQuon'....

Sorry about this shocking ignorance here :(

Model number is prob on a white sticker on the bottom/rear of PC. Prob has a barcode or serial number on it as well.

If worse comes to worst, you could open case up and the RAM currently installed probably has a sticker on it stating it's type/spec etc.

Edit: I'd be a bit wary about buying RAM off ebay. Depending on who you buy it off, returning it if it's not compatible might be an issue. I'd def recommend shop4memory. Great service and if there are any problems they are very quick to resolve.

When you buy ram off of EBAy is it brand new?? or second hand ram which you guys are talking about??

Juggalo your ram does not have to be the same size . It would make it alot easier to buy the same make of ram that you already have because some mobo's are picky about what you ave in them.

It'll say if its new or used on the bidding page. Make sure you check the users feedback and comments by other buyers. Also with the dollar buckling at the moment you will get good value buying from a US seller, even with shipping.
