Always stay with plastic ones Stephen. The most accelleration is with the lowest gearing for speed (=highest torque)
That is with the smallest clutch bell, and largest compatible spur gear.

I dont have a Savage but "Tallus" does and will ansewer that better than I can.

I do have a Revo though and am going to stick to standard gearing as i am well pleased with it.

    To answewr your question..

You will not get best acceleration AND top speed at one setting unless you leave the standard gearing in there.
It will end up either Popping wheelies all over the place and revving its guts out then with no top speed.
    Or
plenty of top speed and no grunt..

    Next up
    Stick with the plastic
If you decide to go with the alloy or whatever you could find that instead of the spur shredding its teeth off you could pass the damage along to the next weakest point which could and probably would be a lot more expensive to repair. ;)

i run savage 25 rtr, 18t clutch bell, and 52t spur gear, i think its a fair nuff combo, not goin to the extreme of 15tc.b.-52ts.g. just a little extra acceleration

Mine is running on a 13t clutchbell 52 tooth spur gear but I'm a wheelie nut, I just can't do enough of them.
The 13 is lowest and 52 is highest that they manufacture.
I'm sure the HPI site has a link to the proiper gearing setups, it's more critical than you'd think, last time I bought a steel spur gear I got a graph with it specifying which combinations to use with each of the three engines they recommend you to put in to the savage. If I find it I'll certainly post it here, it's handy to have.
    *edit*
I found that literature with the correct spur gear/clutchbell combo please find attached :)

Why don,t you invest in a 3 speed. You will have better acceleration and a higher top end speed. Improves acceleration, speed and torque by 10%

    My Savage is 3 speed.

You shouldn't have to change anything else just transfer existing bits and pieces to the new tranny.
It hasn't made a huge difference with me but I still have to adjust it a wee bit to get it to change in to second early enough. It is excellent to hear the truck shift that extra gear tho, and the top end is faster tho I haven't actually tried to clock the speed.
