Getting an n64 for dossing around with during the summer - always thought it was the most playable of that generation. I'll have the following games for it

    Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Zelda: Majora's Mask
    Goldeneye
    Perfect Dark
    Mario Kart 64
    Mario 64
    Mario Tennis 64
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Yoshi's Story
    Turok 2
    Quake
    Gex 64

Is there anything I'm criminally missing out on? Rare JAP/US Imports, amazingly underrated multiplayer games? (also, anyone want to trade Gex 64 for just about ANY other game or have any games not listed they'd like to sell?)

Quite a few you are missing:

    Jet Force Gemini
    Diddy Kong racing
    Mario Golf
    Mystical Ninja
    Excite Bike
    Wave Race 64
    Banjo Kazooie and Tootie
    Lylat Wars
    F-zero X
    Blast Corps
    Body Harvest
    Rayman 2
    Space Station Silicon Valley
    Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
    Shadowman
    1080 snowboarding
    Paper Mario
    Wipeout 64
    Ridge Racer 64
    Glover
    Harvest Moon

Not many imports. Best bets are:
    Sin and Punishment
    Goemons great adventure
    Ogre Battle 64
    Custom Robo

Remember that if you want to play imports you need an NTSC console. They can be modified to take Jap or American games. The PAL console is practically a different machine so there isn't a mod to allow NTSC games to be played and any pass through cartridges, etc. don't work terribly well.

Edit: Banjai-oh if you haven't got it on the DC.

    Super Smash Bros.!

Its hard to believe that there will never be another game ever like zelda:Ocarina of time. The graphics were not the best but it really is at the bottom of my list for good gameplay. Nothing comes near it in my opinion. I always get a nostalgic feeling when i think of it and there are very few modern games that can produce a feeling like that.

I never played it for more than 30mins :o I'm sure someday I will get a chance to fire up the cube' and give it a whirl, but it just looks so nasty.

Thought the graphics while not breath-taking came close to it. A true epic imo. Certainly stood the test of time imo unlike so many other classics. Mario 64, Final Fantasy vii to name a few.

Also another few games i liked that weren't mentioned.

    Donkey Kong 64
    Pokemon Stadium
    Bomberman 64
Mario Party 1 (even though most of the rest suck)

Pilotwings is also worth a look, but Retro fairly named all the essentials right there

    conkers bad fur day!

Jet Force Gemini was wicked. You could waste anything and it was always really bloody. Very hard though, classic Rare. Unlike PDZ.
Pokémon Stadium was so frustrating, I remember trying to get a Surfing Pikachu and actually screaming at the telly. The only other time I've done that was when I fought Solidus on Extreme in MGS2.

Hmm... Definitely Lylat wars is on my list - I'll stay away from my RPGs for the moment, I far prefer the SNES topdown or the PS cinematic approach - I never knew Wipeout was on the 64  how does it compare to 2097 (my single most replayed game of all time) in terms of sickening speed?

If I was to get five of what I was missing, how does this sound :

    Mario Golf
    Lylat Wars
    Wipeout 64
    F-Zero X
    Jet Force Gemini

if you're gonna be playing mutliplayer then diddy kong racing is a must tbh. It is so brilliant and when 2 or more people get really good at it it gets sooo tactical! best multiplayer racing of all time.

fzero x is pretty bad tbh. it really doesnt seem like youre going fast in it at all. kinda boring too.

Ocarina of Time is one of the true greats. I have fond memories of Super Mario 64 too. Loved 1080, Blast Corps, Conker and Snowboard Kids too.

Possibly one of the most underrated N64 games ever? I loved it, innovative and so uterly playable. Body Harvest as well is a deffo, the atmosphere was fantastic and really apocalyptic, but perhaps a bit dated graphics-wise (if this doesn't bother you snap it right up!)

    Goldeneye FTW!!!!

    also:
    Mario 64
    Orcarina of Time
    Majoras Mask
    Mario Party

Just to restate - these are the games I already have :)

So top 5 I don't have would then be

    Lylat Wars
    Mario Golf
    Space Station Silicon
    Wipeout 64
    Jet Force Gemini

The N64 was my console of choice all those years ago; unfortunetly most of its best games haven't aged very well. Here are a few of my favourites that (probably) hold up today:

    Excitebike 64
F-Zero X (since been bettered by F-Zero GX on the Gamecube, though this has Death Race :))
Legend of Zelda: OOT (still a gem)
    Legend of Zelda: MM
    Lylat Wars/Starfox 64
    Mischief Makers
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Mystical Ninja 2 (great 2 player, is on PAL too)
    Paper Mario
    Pilotwings 64
Snowboard Kids (superior to Mario Kart 64 in the day imo. Probably crap now though)
Super Mario 64 (still a joy to play now like the Marios before it)
Yoshi's Story (solely for the fruit quest)

Oh, and Superman 64. Just for humours sake.

    Thought Conkers was overrated tripe.

You should really get Space Station Silicon Valley.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 603 ✭✭✭shatners basoon

I'd say most those games you've got'll last you a nice length of time, especially the zeldas with MM being one of my favourites of all time, OoT wasnt' bad either :p Don't think i've ever played a game with a better control system.
Mystical Ninja is hilarious and i second Silicon Valley too, really innovative game, haven't seen anything like it since.
I'd choose mario tennis over mario golf personally solely for the multiplayer. Diddy Kong Racing also has amazing depth (despite its kiddy image)

I thought Conker's was quite fun really, worth it if you can get it on the cheap but yes it was overrated and some of the humour is pretty poor, (if you find poo hilarious its right up your alley!)

Ah.... the N64 was great :D

    Snowboard Kids.
What a ledgend of a game. It's still great.

I also quite enjoyed Rogue Squadron.
Anything else has already been mentioned.

Loved Mario64, a timeless beautiful game, amazing, shows just how bloated and overwhelming Donkey Kong 64 really is.
I love Beetle Adventure Racing and Diddy Kong Racing, can't wait for the DS version of the latter!
I quite like a game called Glover, a very weird platformer, Mario/Marblemadness, quite quite odd.
Pilotwings is the one I would most like to see translated to the DS, it could be the chill out game of the century.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭klingklang

Pilotwings is superb - Stunt Race FX was fun too.

Oh God Glover  the game took years off my life, It was so annoyin. The puzzles were fun at times but to much like marblemaddness for my liken.
Also another game that i remembered just now was Buck Bumble (or something similar). You were a bee that had moves based on a helicopter and flew around shooting other bees, flies, wasps etc. Was pretty good.

Yeah I remember Glover, and Buck Bumble! Does anyone remember the title music to it? Awful!

Ah jeez, so many memories! In Pilotwings I used to just fly about for hours in the plane thing. And the mini-games were great too - especially the cannon one :D

    Glover was fun!
Although I only played a demo of it........on the PC.
But it seemed like a good game.

Well thanks a lot guys. I should be finishing Dragon Quest VIII and now the N64 is getting a thorough going over.

Really have to get my hands on Lylat Wars and Pilotwings.

Actually a great underrated multiplayer game imo was Duke Nukem 64. I used to have great matches with my mates way back in the day - get a 3 player game going against the dukebot on the hardest difficulty setting on Castle Dukenstein, Piracy or the Stadium. Great stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

Was Banjo Kazooie mentioned? Another top quality Rare platformer.

I remember picking up an N64 with Goldeneye for 100 pound, some of the best money I ever spent. Still playing Goldeneye to this day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

Jeez, Banjo Kazooie. The last place with the big tree in the winter mode was possibly my most frustrating gaming experience. Ever. Was nearly at the top and I slipped on ice right down to ther bottom again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

Forsaken is well worth a look. It would be a pretty unremarkable first-person shooter, if it wasn't for the fact that you fly around the stages with lovely controls that allow complete, fast 3D movement. Great fun, though the multiplayer is really head-wrecking for quite a while before it gets really intense. :D

Also, Zelda: Majora's Mask is a must play. Snowboard Kids and Silicon Valley are, too.
