what's garbage collection in the context of vb.net?

i have an exam tomoro in vb.net and i have looked at many resources, but i still fail to understand the concept of garbage collection can someone please tell me what it is posts much appreciated thanks for the help lads :) :) ;)

The garbage collector clears the memory of code that is not being used by a program as it runs, so it can be used by other applications.

In languages such as C, this is not a "built in" function, you have to assign memory addresses and clear them accordingly.
