Ive Read the recent review of the Pentium D 805 at toms hardware, found here http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores_uk/

Now, ive been waiting to get a PC for a long time, and i feel this is the time to go for it. Either intel screwed up, or done this intentionally. Regardless, this is good news for customers, and i feel if i invest in the overclocking, it'll pay off. So, with that inmind, i consider heading into my first serious overclocking experience headfirst.

My plan is this: Spend lots of cash, get components, overclock, win.

    Component list:
    Intel Pentium D 805 http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=ECE1188845

    G-Skill 2 gig ddr2 kit http://www.memory-configurator.com/brand/G-SKILL/F2-4200PHU2-2GBLA.html

    ATi Radeon X1900 XTX http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=317430

    Tagan 2force 480W, Dual Fan, 4xSATA, ATX/EPS, SLI, 20/24pin http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308883

Ill be porting some things from my current system (sound card, HDD, DVD/RW). Why am i posting this here? Simply, im too damn incompetant to find a good Quality, but low cost mobo. Anything from 80 to 150 euro would be perfect, but i can push that up another 20 quid or so if needed. I want Good performance, obviously, but i need this to be as cheap as possible. Any and all help will be appreciated. Compatibility between all the components is a must, obviously. thanks again.

You can get that ram on shop4memory.com for the same price but with free shipping......

What case and CPU cooler will you be using?

These will be important. Don't skimp on either as heat and noise are going to be issues.

You will want a good case with great airflow and that keeps the noise down.

Ditto the cpu cooler: good cooling without giving off too much noise.

Yeah, I second the need for good cooling. A highly overclocked D805 is going to be blasting out over 200 watts of heat.

Komplett don't really sell many decent coolers, I guess this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=312474 is the best one they sell for socket 775. It amazes me that after all these years and all their success that they won't bother to stock anything decent.... Whats wrong with some thermalright or scythe i ask you!?

You're goign to want a case with good airflow too, maybe one of the Gigabyte Aurora cases. Or else something else with reasonably fast fans installed into it.

For the PSU for an extra 4 euro I'd get the 550watt fortron. An X1900XT and a Pentium D will suck an awful lot of power down and you don't want to be limited by your PSU.

Can't really help you on the motherboard front though.

The case that uberpixie sujested is a very good case in terms of cooling.

There where also a few problems with the P180, silentpcreview's forum is full of it.
There's a black version from antec out now as well which has some of the issues adressed.

I'm gonna agree with the rest, if your going to overclock you need your cooling sorted! Check out hitide.ie, shop4memory for ram and im sure that cpu is avail else where cheaper to.

Yeah i htink it is €20 cheaper on Komplett.

I would buy the parts from overclockers.co.uk

The cheapest X1900XTX on Komplett is €540

You can get the same card from Overclockers.co.uk for €460

They also have this cooler which is only around €25 and its very good, performs as well as some low end water cooling kits......

I would also get a 500watt enermax liberty, its €100 and a beast of a PSU

    I am running a athlon 64 3700 @3ghz, a X1800XT, a raptor, 2 HDDs.......

    And its still rock stable...

^^^^ THats the CPU cooler i was going to recommend too but i couldnt remember the name of it. Do you read CPC conzymaher??

I havent heard anything about that PSU but i believe it has modular cableing which is a nice touch that will aid cooling.

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

Yup I read CPC, but I had the Freezer 64 pro before they reviewed it:D

Its a great mag, probably the only good PC mag.....

But it always has last months technology in it...

The liberty is great two 22amp 12v rails, and a very good reputation and good reviews. Its alot better than the Hiper Type-R that alot of people swear by......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Yeah??it always has old stuff in it? Have you read other magezines ,do you find CPC to be most accurate?? Its the only one i like. I would get it every month but im trying desperatly to save up for a good rig so I only get the mag every 4 or five months to try and keep up with things.
I find it often clashes with what Toms hardware say abouut a product.

They have that liberty PSU on sale this week at overclockers.

It probably clashes with whatever Tom's hardware had to say because Tom's are useless shills...

i just get my friend to buy the 2 of them and then i stell them.but to be hounest
    custom pc is better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

yeah thats what my personal oppinion is but i havent looked too closely at other magezines.I thought maybe some"hardcore" pc enthusiasts would not like CPC because it is visually different to the other magezines, more appealing to the mass's.

cheers guys, some great info here. Ill be having a look at the cooling systems, something i forgot to cover when i originally typed my post out. However, im still no closer to finding a great board for this system.

Im still on the prowl, so, any help is appreciated.
