    Hi Guys,

Ive got a couple of photos for C&C, which i would consider the 4 best from my last 2 outings.

the first 2 are from the road between seapoint and salthill.

The second 2 were taken in the pool hall @ the palace.

I almost got what i was looking for, but i think my lens and lack of tripod let me down perhaps???

can anyone recommend a lens that would have coped better under low light?

let me know your honest opinions please cos im basically a complete novice :o

I like the last one. First two are just photos.. cant say any more about them.
Then again im no photographer... only did a little amateur stuff. Maybe i will post some holiday pics up here and see what people think.

Ah i was expected some shots over the hedge through your neighbours garden :)

The shots look pretty good to me, fairly well composed. Unfortunately I know nothing about lens but someone will point you in the right direction Im sure of it. Keep posting :)

I love the second one. So much. Nice work.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I clicked on the links there but that second picture is fantastic. I do like the first one, it's a nice light and well, I'm a big fan of leaves generally but the second one steals the show.

As for the pool shots, it's great to see something different. Technically I don't know how to help you out except to say that if you want to be able to shoot at faster shutter speeds in low light you need a fast lens like an f1.8. I think quite a few people on here have the Canon 50mm f1.8 including myself and the low light is the main point of getting it. If you're not on Canon there's surely an equivalent for your system.

Just loving that second picture though....

thanks guys ... ive got some really good ideas for pool ERU.... but im going to need a good high tripod, and a lense to cope with the low light .... i have a nikon d70s ... can anyone recommend a lens to match the canon 50mm at a reasonable price? I might get myself a tripod and go to play pool early one day, so i dont look so silly in front of a crowd :)

thanks for the comment on looking out elven and octavarian ... its my favourite of these too, although i have to confess this was doctored a little to get the look i wanted, and i wanted the pool ones to be the best, but i'll hopefully get exactly what i wanted next time :)

oh, and this is the first time i have shot in RAW too ... such a difference when you may have not taken the perfect shot technically, but can be rescued by altering white balance etc :) ... no going back now :)

second shot is very good, love the guy in the bottom left, gives a good sense of scale.

15 ball is a pretty good shot and interesting too!

the corner shot had a lot of potential, and i dunno if this was done on purpose or not, but i cant seem to see any part of the pic in focus at all?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 405 ✭✭peepingtom

yeah the corner shot, was supposed to have the shiny corner surface in focus and the rest slightly out, but the low light level meant i needed to decrease the shutter speed, and without a tripod, i lost it a little ... im going to have another go at that .... ive ordered the nikon 50mm f1.8 ..... hope that this will help shots like this

Good, cause Id really like to see it done properly!

Where did you order the 50mm, how much? If you dont mind.

The 50mm 1.8 You can get it in Gunns for about 150, make sure that when you are ordering it you get the AF-D version, the older version is cheaper but doesn;t have the cpu thing for full D70 compatability...

I really like the second one although I think i could have been hugely improved if it was much wider, even if you had to stitch many photo;s together.... just my 2c though

Also you should try experimenting with the rear curtain sync on your camera for those indoor shots... just cause you may like what you get...

    Flipfalp:

I ordered it from this ebay seller http://stores.ebay.co.uk/DIGITALiSHOP-com

its the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D with Free 52mm UV Filter

got it for 100 euros give or take a few cents ... although i may have to pay vat on it if the guys in customs cop on. Still i'll save a few bob anyway.

    Sol:

I have taken a few to stich up from a different day out in kiliney hill .... i do like that effect, but i never thought about it for this shot to be honest because i wanted the main freature to be the man looking out.

I will post the one from kiliney when i get a minute to stitch it, but be warned, it will probably take a week to download :) ... its going to be huge :)

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the curtain sync?

    Thanks guys

Once you buy from an EU country you won't have to pay any extra VAT or duty on importation.

Its being shipped from hong kong joolsveer. sometimes they get through, especially if they mark it as a gift. However im not sure how it works it they are an EU based company, shipping goods form Hong Kong???

I always get mixed up with which is which but I *think* that rear curtain sync is when your flash fires at the end of the exposure rather than the start, so you get the movement trail and then the actual image will show after it rather than having the image then the trail. Does that make sense? I'm sure someone will find a better explanation by Googling it though...

If you hold down the flash button and cycle through the options with the control wheel you'll find in goes to one called "rear", at least in PASM modes afaik. This is where it fires the flash at about half what is needed at the end of a long exposure, it gives a kind of glowy effect, just looks cool. You'll probably find a better explanation somewhere on google...
