When excited attendees left yesterday's Konami press conference, they were handed a catalog for Studio Kojima's forthcoming slate of games. However, many didn't know it, since the brochure was a clever imitation of the newsletter handed out each day at of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

On the front of the Kojima catalog was a "breaking news" box, which bore the headline "Solid Snake...On the silver screen?" The blurb below it read, "In a late-breaking surprise announcement, director Hideo Kojima revealed that his most famous creation--Metal Gear Solid--is getting the live-action treatment."

Given the semicomic nature of the fake E3 newsletter/Kojima Productions catalog, many thought the story was a joke. However, on the last page of the pamphlet was a page-long article on the project, which showed that Kojima was dead serious when he made the announcement.

After assuring readers at length that German director Uwe Boll will not have anything to do with the project, as rumored, Kojima talked about the film. "I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," said the revered designer. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."

Kojima did not mention the name of the party, a release date, or any potential directors or stars. However, ever since the original PlayStation Metal Gear Soild, the English-language dialogue of game hero Solid Snake has been voiced by Hollywood figure David Hayter. Though a prolific voice actor, Hayter has enjoyed greater success as a screenwriter, with credits for X-Men, X2, and the forthcoming Watchmen under his belt.

    So many questions.

Is this going to be a big screen remake of MGS-1/2? Or will the movie help fill the gaps between MGS-2 & 4. Will he crawl around in a box? Will anyone ever roar his name, thinking our hero has been killed? Will Snakes fingers go numb trying to endure torture?

Metal Gear on the big screen could either be pretty bad-ass, or just pretty bad.

Fans have already started creating their ideal casts, some thinking that Tom Cruise could be perfectly suited to the role, at least visually.

As long as HGW writes the soundtrack, I'm happy.

I wouldn't be happy with Tom Cruise to say the least. My biggest hope would be that Kojima has a big part in making it, but that's probably unlikely.

Good point....Kurt Russel to play Solid Snake.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is like a movie that occasionally lets you play parts of it!

I always thought MGS was one of the more doable video game adaptions. Done right, I think it could be really good.

    heh, great thread title.

I always said if this never happens I will make a movie of it. But it is now. I hope a great director comes on board and makes it a dark, good cult movie as apposed to a Mega-Budget BlockBuster with loads of explosions etc. I think the best route to go would be Base the film on just the first(Playststion) game, and have the dialogue exactly the same so it reveals back story about Snake and Big Boss and Snake and Grey Fox Etc.

I really hope this project doesn't get Botched, Pleeeeeeaaaaaaaase let it be good.

I think Hugh Jackman would be a good choice for snake

Kurt Russell... no-one else. All i want is for him to shout "Metal Gear" in an alarmingly aggressive tone. That'd make my year.

I'd hope it would be a film of MGS1 or 3 because MGS2 wouldnt really go well with the whole metal gear actually controlling his mind and being his commander as well as his enemy. that would be way too confusing and would end up as a flop. I would like to see MGS3 be made as that is the absolute start of the metal gears. It would only make sense to have that first, right:confused:

The original MGs would've been earlier still, but Escape from New York came first.

Yep. Metal Gear would have first come out around '87 or '88 on the NES.

I've never actually understood the appeal of the games really.

Escape form New York was released in 1981. Metal Gear was released on the MSX on in 1987.

Hideo kojima openly admits that solid snake is inspired by snake plisken from the john carpenter films.

hence in metal gear solid 2, when snake is posing as a soldier he tells raiden his name is plisken.

personnally depending on how much funding is been thrown at this project. I'd be looking for the best storyline to cover that work best as films.

thats why i would try and make a trilogy out of:

    Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear [maybe combining elements of MG2 (death of grey fox)]
    Metal Gear Solid.

That way you allow for a large diverse cast (classic snake, young solid, big boss, solid and liquid) Themes and plot elements continue strongly in all 3 films (Legacy, meaning of war, role of the soldier, cloning, development of metal gear)

Course if you only have the funding for one film, metal gear solid in theory would be the best, but i rather push kojima for a fresh plotline linking metal gear solid 3 and metal gear or something else exclusive for film.

Very good layout. Avoids MGS2, and gives a nice progression that would be rounded off well with the end of MGS.
My biggest hope is that they don't do the standard videogame movie thing, and throw away the plot and write their own film with a few references to the games. This is a franchise that deserves a proper adaptation.

As much as i love the Metal Gear Series i'm against this idea. The games are cinematic enough as it is without needing a film to water down the plot and the little details which make the experience so enjoyable...

But if Kurt Russell is in it i'm all for it! (but with David Hayter's voice overdubbed :D)

would be one long film though - the original metal gear solid. All them bosses and back stories?

the first metal gear would make the best film though, it would just be very difficult to go about. Do you make a 5 hour film dealing with all the bosses? do you cut them out? none of them are forgettable, imo some of the most memorable game bosses I've ever played against - each with their own stories. Ocelot is a must, as is vulcan raven as he appears twice, liquid snake and the rex are boses and you cant leave sniper wolf or mantis out. it just wouldnt work that way. all that is without mentioning probably the story that would have to go into the most detail. GREY FOX and his back story. throw in otacon and meryl and thats alot of material do have to deal with.

^ looks like hollywood could majorly fúck that story up

people will have to accept that if they go to see a movie of metal gear solid that it will be a film adaptation of the game not a direct transfer, no movie could adequetley cover the story as is in 1.5-2 hours.

Although it will never happen, wouldn't it be great if Kojima directed it!

And what about david hayter himself for snake

    hayterth.jpg

Although he probably cant act, it wouldnt be the same without his voice.
