What basing materials do you use?

Ok so I mentioned this in another post, I especially like putting effort into my bases and am curious what everyone else uses to get the theme they like.

One of my favourites was the lower torso of a Chaos Marine on Ghazkulls base with the upper half clutched in his claw still squirming. There was dark bloo dsprayed everywhere with a tooth brush. Mmmmm everywhere...

I converted Brother Bethor into a captain cos i liked the angle his standard arm was at. I modelled a power sword onto this arm. For the base i kept it simple but it ended up looking really good. I glued a skull from a chaos sprue on the base between his feet. I painted the base really decoratively, not practically at all, kind of like a miniature display stand i.e. purity seals galore and i used green stuff to make the word "Gladius" (the name of the character).
I was really impressed with how it turned out.
