In other news alphabet soup has merged with alphabet bars to make even more acronyms possible.

    Shut your pie hole Roper!:D

I think this sounds like a very good development for Kickboxing. Not sure how it's going to effect the national groups though.

I was a bit surprised as for the last few years IAKSA have been hosting joint world championships with the WKA, presumably that's stopped now.

So, kickboxing in the olympics anyone?
The Olympics committee have made great strides with M.A. lately they recognised Amateur Muay Thai a while back also!!!

I imagine it was easy for the World Muay Thai Council as they are the one ruling body for Muay Thai in the world, there seems to be a lot of kickboxing organisations around so I guess its a good thing for them to merge.

Don't think KB will get in. Too similar to TKD and Boxing. Thai would be a great addition IMO. Amateur Thai looks good

As far as I know Amateur Muaythai is a demonstration sport for the next Games and that means it will be an event at the following Olympics which is London 2012.

True, true, but in terms of world championships it's about the big three, WAKO, WKA and IAKSA, there are others but these are considered the main ones. Two of these merging gives the sport much more credibility IMO in terms of governing bodies.

Me too. I've two nice national title belts that mean sweet feck all unfortunately. :(

BTW whats the difference between amateur Muay Thai and pro?

Safety equipment. Shin/instep pads, headguards, belly protectors. Points scoring system too I think.

Well Kickboxing has really come on recently, I remember when I started 5 years ago that our club was the only one in Derry but there are that many now.

I have irish titles too, but not the ones I want ( Irish open and National's would be nice, although I was cheated in the open's haha). I've fought in the WKA's World Championships twice, beat twice by two girls that ended up in the top three haha.

But I do agree that the two orginisations merging will be better.

By the way, what forms do you's all do, semi, light or full contact?

yes, i think the amateur guys be all padded up, and TKD style chest protector..

Up here, where I live in Thailand in north east, I do not think they would even have seen a shin protector, nor a gum guard!

Well the protection saves on injuries but believe me kicks, knees and elbows still hurt like fuvk, but it does save the kicker some pain for example if his kick was blocked. The rounds are also different, 5 x 3 pro Thai, and I think its 4 x 2 for the amateur (it was 3x2 prelims and 5 x 2 finals when we fought in 96/96). All in all it can be a great spectator sport because with the padding the fighters don't get injured as easily so they're willing to try a lot more risky stuff.
