If they wanted people to populate a new base on Mars, would you go?

    So...

Earth is in the process of terraforming Mars and has built a base on it, just like the ones in the sci-fi movies.

Families, scientists and workers (i.e. the job you can do) are invited to populate the base and create a new life there. You'll be helping turn Mars into a future colony.

Food is delivered every six months. You'll be confined to quite a large base, with a bar, free food, old movies, a gym, and not much else to do. You have to sign a minimum of a 20 year contract.

Basically, you'll never need much money, you'll be helping to create something, but your life as you know it will be over.

    Would you go?

PS I cannot say for certain that you will be 100% safe from aliens

Eh.....popular cinema and literature leads to be believe the first planet that earth populates will have

    1) Some weird aliens on it that kill everyone
    2) A Gate to Hell
    3) Barbara Strisand

as such, not if it's the first, but if it's the second then sure, i'll go.

Id go for a holiday but I wouldn't live there :D

Nah I wouldn't live there, I wouldn't mind going for a holiday though.

We still haven't completely wrecked this planet yet though, we should finish what we started here first.

Can we just send all the skangers to mars instead ?
Cheaper and more humane than sending monkeys, plus the scientists wont get so attached to them. Also if something goes wrong on mars no one will mind.

Well if you look at the Doom3 Mars base, I mean before the gates of Hell were opened, it really was quite a sh!thole. All you do is work, you live underground for the most part. Whatever free time you have is probably spent sleeping to stave off boredom.

This is what it would probably be like. But, if it is the sort of Utopia you describe, I might consider it. I'd go for 5 years just to see what happened while I was gone. And there would have to be considerable financial incentives also. AND plenty of hot red-head scientist chicks. Plenty...

    On a related note: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=296077

Me, I wouldn't go live there - there might be unforeseen health hazards but I'd visit, maybe.

10 year contract. 1 million in travel expences to be paid tax free into my earth account and a futher 250K in danger money. Twice my current yearly salary out there. Title. Nice accodomation. I'm in.

....if we're there to populate it, do I get a few wives thrown in?

    I with this too.

    Absolutely!
I would love, LOVE to do it.
Even tho it would be a one way trip.
In fact, (if i didn't approve of the way some things were going...) i'd have an ulterior motive of agitating for indepence from Earth so that we could cut all ties and be Martians from that point on!

Hmm, if all my friends came, sure! :)
Otherwise it is a bit much to give up.

If I was given a harem of women, to go forth and populate the planet... I'd consider it. Mars is a smaller planet with 1/3 gravity, so you'd could pretend to be superman, lifting 3 times as much, and jumping 3 times farther.

Although the truth is that once you get outside the earths magnetic field, the cosmic rays would rip your DNA to pieces in the long term. Not sure if Mars has a decent magnetic field to repel the cosmic rays. Otherwise, you'd probably mutate, become sterile, and/or be riddled with cancer within 10 years.
Plus the TV reception would probably be rubbish....

What else do you want to do? get me coverage of the premier League and I'm there. Besides gravity, theres not much keeping me here on earth.

Um deep fried mars bars and a chance to go home after all these years.

Forgot to mention for those not Interested in Mars, there is always the Google Copernicus Centre due to open on the moon next year.

The deregulation of Space Travel and advent of Competition has really revitalised the Space Age. Good Man Senator Sedgwick Sexton. Richard Branson with Virgin Galactic now Google, I guess space is the limit. I wonder when Mick O'Leary and Ryanair start offering flights to Mars, Then again they'd propably drop you off at the moon and let you catch the train into town.
